SFU Computing Science

So I'll be starting the Computing Science BSc program at SFU in September. I'll be taking the bus from Richmond. Yes I know it will be hell. Any words of wisdom/advice/experiences you can share?

- Show up to class and pay attention. (Sounds simplistic, but If you manage to do this, half the battle is done)
- Make sure you work in a team when it comes to assignments.
- Take co-op.
- Have a life outside school, excersize.
- Buy a nice wind/water proof jacket and prepare for not seeing the Sun for extended periods at a time. (I would bet that Richmond gets significantly more sunshine than bby mountain.)
- And last, but not least, get ready for not seeing any decent looking girls in your classes for 4 years.

That's off the top of my head...

Pedro

Just admit it, you're jealous...

... and Lavergne isn't THAT bad, I could think of quite a few profs that are MUCH worse.

edit:
My advice?

Don't get kicked out.

Given that you sound like quite a pimp, a gimp one that is, I imagined you would be interested in that sort of thing.

Then again, if that's not your sort of thing, that's cool, too...

I'm not a pimp at all, the username is just an inside joke. Either way, i would like to have at least a few good looking girls in my classes.

Enough about that though. I'll be starting off with MATH 151, MACM 101, CMPT 126 and PHIL 120
comments/advice?

Who are your profs?

As for girls, there'll be more than enough good looking girls... just not in comp sci classes.

Math 151, there'll be acouple of good looking girls... That said, the course sucks.

Macm 101, this course probably sucks more than math 151, but when you're finished it, you'll see how easy it is. (no girls)

CMPT 126... honestly, take cmpt 120. 126 is for people who know how to program, that said, your whole class will be smart, and no girls...

cmpt 120 = a bunch of idiots seeing what comp sci is really like. There'll be tons of good looking girls, before they realize how much comp sci sucks (good chance to help them with hw), and since you already know coding, it's an EASY A. that said, it puts you 1 class behind, but it's a risk you should be willing to take !

phil 120... It's probably just me, but phil sucked. I fell asleep almost every class... Actually... I fell asleep EVERY class, and the readings were brutal. That said, there's TONS of girls in that class, so you won't have to worry)

scheduale looks good, but I'd recommend cmpt 120... It's an easy course, and you can focus more time on your other 3 courses. Uni is completely different then high school and a LOT of kids do HORRIBLE in their first semester, so make it as easy as you can, and have fun!

p.s. See you at school.

- I haven't officially signed up for courses yet. That's happening on the 10th
- I was thinking about cmpt 120 but then I realized that I'd have to learn Python for that course. I've spent the last 2 years learning Java (and a I challenged the Comp sci AB AP exam) So I say "no thanks" to learning a new language now.
- As for Philosophy: I know it will be boring, but it will also be easier than English. 'nuff said

Thanks for the pointers! How far into the program are you?

dude, you're going to have to learn like 3 new languages at some point..
For ENSC I had to learn:
-java, C, C++, VHDL, Matlab, HC12 and 16 Assembler.

no point in putting it off.

Python = the easiest language for coding. If you've taken comp sci ap, and you don't get a B or an A, there's somethign wrong with you...

... I don't think you get how easy the course is, trust me, just take it!

Phil, is actually not that much easier than English, I said the SAME thing, and took phil, and now that I look at it, I would have rather done English. Personally... I HATE writing papers, which is pretty much all you do in philsophy...

I just finished second, going into 3rd... Which really means, I'm still finishing off 2nd level courses... I'm sure you'll see me at school, and like I said, join froshweek! It seems lame (which it kinda is), but it's still super fun, and you'll meet a shitload of people pretty damn fast.
