Report: Fertitta Brothers Purchase PRIDE Fighting Championships for $65 Million

"According to today’s episode of Sherdog’s The Savage Dog Show/BeatDown, UFC majority owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta have purchased the Japenese-based PRIDE Fighting Championships for a startling-low price of $65 million. (You can find a heated discussion on the Sherdog Forums.)

The show is relying an anonymous source that is said to be “very reliable,” and an official announcement is expected to come on Wednesday.

PRIDE, the UFC’s biggest competitor and perhaps the world’s most recognizable MMA organization, has reportedly suffered a variety of hardships during the past year. Rumors of its potential sale have circulated constantly in the past couple months, with current PRIDE USA Vice President Ed Fishman and the Zuffa LLC-owned UFC emerging as the two most-likely suitors.

The fact that the Fertittas, not Zuffa, are the rumored buyers is surprising at first take. Surely there’s more to the story, but we’ll have to wait.

PRIDE has publicly stated — numerous times — that the organization wasn’t for sale despite the reports saying otherwise. Today’s rumors would obviously hint otherwise.

So what would this mean for the UFC?

It’s hard to say without knowing the particulars. But of most importance would be the UFC’s access to PRIDE’s thoroughly impressive list of international fighters. The purchase could open the door for cross-promotion superfights that could destroy previous records for gates, attendance and pay-per-view revenue."

Things are going to be intresting if this is true boys. I got this from Joe Rogans site but it is all over every mma site.

true enough gooch. I honestly think cro cop is a bit over rated with his glass jaw. What do you think of this Gooch Good for MMA? Bad?

I think it will make for some interesting match ups, more in the lighter weight classes though

I don't think wandy can take chuck anymore, to hard knockouts and it totally changes your game

I just hope they don't mess with the pride rules and keep it like it is

I really wanna see mark hunt in the ufc though throwing with all the "top strikers"

i would love to see shogun fight chuck in all reality but i have never liked either chuck or wandy so i would like to see them beat down each other

I also hope that each respective organization keeps it's own rules. There are good things about each that make it distinct.

Its a good thing. If all goes right both organizations will stay separate other than inter-org matchups.

If we lose knees on the ground, soccer kicks and stomps I will snap.

Mirko and Fedor has been overdone -- Mirko is a machine but he can't solve killbot.

What do I want to see?

Shogun vs. Chuck
Hendo vs. Chuck
Fedor vs. Sylvia (just because)
Kongo vs. Hunt
Arona vs. Ortiz
Arlovski vs. Aleksander
Penn vs. Aoki
Nogueira vs. Couture
Kang vs. Franklin

Melendez vs Sherk
Hunt vs. Sylvia
Hendo vs. Silva
Hendo vs. Franklin

I could go on and on, the matchups are endless.

I wouldn't call him overrated nor say that his chin is suspect. Who KO'd him? Randleman and that was a freak incident. In K-1, the only guy to KO him was Ernesto Hoost -- thats not saying much when anyone is KTFO by Mr. Perfect.

He will continue to wade through the UFC HW's and his only stumbling block will be having face Fedor or Hunt again.

That was a technical knockout -- stoppage. And yes, Fedor is a bad matchup for him but Fedor is a bad matchup for anyone.

poor nog. his ability to take punches to the head was displayed very well in that fight.
