Screws in my ankle coming loose?

Anyone have experience with any of the screws holding the plates on a bone break coming loose?

I've been noticing my ankle brace and my hiking boots are rubbing my ankle causing quite a bit of pain lately so I checked my ankle and I can feel a couple of the screw heads seem to be sticking out under the skin about a quarter inch. My ankle also has a bit of a dull ache now.

Just wondering if has happened to anyone else. I"m getting it checked out tomorrow by my doc so I want give him as much info as I can. Any input would be appreciated.

When I was getting my pins put in the guy next to me had a loose screw...it looked like it had come loose about half an inch and was trying to escape from under his skin....

I have had metal put in my left wrist twice. One time 5 screws, and this last time just one screw. My last surgery he removed 5 screws, to get at bone for grafting in my new surgery. The surgeons/doctors have always told me if the hardware ever gives me problems to come in and see them, and if need be they can remove it. I got 4 holes right thru my radius now where he took out screws.
Apparantly you dont really need them there after it is all healed. It should not make it too much weaker if at all he said, and the holes should mostly fill in in time. But if it is bothering you, you might need surgery to remove.
Your DOC would know best, that is just what all I have been told.

peace

go see your doctor ASAP. Only your doctor can tell you whether this is good or bad as he is the medical expert. I only play one on TV. Though if I was in your situation I'd go see my doctor as I wouldn't want to have other problems becuase of the screws.

I can feel the screw heads in my elbow, and I was always worried about whether they were loosse, but it's just the way that they are in there. Has anything else changed? Lost weight could lead to the same problem.
Best to get it checked out though.

I remember a couple years back we were riding with Shaums and his screws in his ankle backed out. Have it checked asap.

Check with Knolly (Noel), he had a horror show problem with his surgical hardware coming apart.
(Maybe he should start designing those surgical stainless steel parts, I'll bet there is a much higher margin than bike stuff.)

Weight loss is definitely not an issue, And yup I'm off to the doc's this afternoon. There is a change though, I've been taking Glucosomene dfor the last 3 months and it has increased my flexibility and strength in the ankle ten fold. Maybe thats stressing the hardware. I'll ask.

Thanks all for the input.

Most of the good hardware is made in Sweeden or Switzerland (I can't remember) and ya - it is friggen expensive!

Testy:
Definitely get it checked out and X-rayed. As CraigH said, I ended up having 3 surgeries on my left arm, each time with a bigger plate, more screws and the final one involved a bone graft from my hip (that sucked way more than actually breaking my arm).

The plate on my Radius had come loose: 4 of the original 6 screws were either loose or broken (2 loose and 2 broken). The plate was "floating" and not holding the bone together. There was no appreciable healing at the fracture site.

You definitely don't want to fool around with this.

Cheers!

Noel
