Guns Kill People or People Kill People?

Since this came up in another thread,

Is it the guns that kill people? Or is it that guns kill people when people make a choice to use guns to kill people?

A gun chased for me for 6 blocks last night. I managed to jump a creek to get away (guns can't swim).

People obviously kill people, but a gun makes it easier to kill people quickly/easily/in higher numbers. If I go nuts and walk into a post office with a gun, I'm going to do a lot more damage than with a knife or a 2x4 with a nail through it. Also, I'm more detached from the victim and don't have to actually get my hands dirty to kill them, which, and I'm totally just going on personal feeling, probably makes it easier to kill, especially if you're in a rage or whatever.

Edit: Also, knives, bats, and even 2x4s with nails through them have purposes other than killing things. Guns dont, unless I'm missing something.

For what it's worth, I'm not totally anti-gun, but I'm pro gun-control, just like I'm pro alcohol/drivers' liscence/high explosives/etc etc etc control.

Totally agree. People kill people but guns make it wasy easier. Fire enough bullets @ 50' and you'll likely kill the person and you don't even have to see their face. With a knife or bat etc, you gotta "reach out and touch someone."

Guns make sense for people who hunt or live in real rural areas where there's lots of wildlife. Living in the city I have no excuse to own a gun, unless I wanna go shoot up the late ngiht drifters in the park in the summer ... hmmmmm

I'd rather have a gun for security than anything else...one reason to have one in the city. I personally love guns but I am a hunter and avid target shooter. I grew up with guns and safety was always a major priority. It's too bad that there are people who are crazy or evil enough to use them to kill people. Gives us gun owners/enthusiasts a bad image and makes it hard to keep our rights.

what if youre a single woman living alone in a mildly shady part of town, where break ins occur with regularity, and even a few rapes here and there, should we deny her a effective means of self defence?

ok, well that would be where a quality safe would come in, as per canadian law. or as is allowed in about 35 states she could go through the hoops and carry it on her person so as to protect herself at anytime.
