Unhappy Leg Armour Makes Awesome Splints

We were out riding yesterday on Mt Fromme. The woodwork was pretty frosty, but we had gotten past the worst of it. I was feeling good and was riding stuff that I had never ridden before, like the steep, wooden ladders in this photo. I just got onto the log, and knew I was going to fall off, so I tried to put some distance between me and the bike. The bike, not wanting to go down on its own, grabbed my foot and we both landed in the creek all tangled up.

As soon as I picked myself up I knew that my hand was broken. Fawcett and Jeffo made an amazing splint with leg armour and we walked out.

I was pretty cold and wet from having just spent more time than I would've wanted to in snow-fed creek, but my hand was really starting to get sore so we headed off to the hospital. Turns out I broke 2 bones in my left hand and go for surgery next week.

Out for everything for 6 weeks. Boy do I feel shame for repeatedly calling MasterPlanDan gimpy

I've done that same break. The recovery wasn't too bad all things considered. Take it easy and let it heal

Heal up good Doug! It's the end of the season though so just look forward to other activities during your recovery (hiking, snowhoeing, skiing if you're brave)

Ouch! heal up soon Doug.

Only ridden that trail once and wimped on that section thinking I could have done it, now I'm glad that I didn't.

You can still dig with your right hand, right? So, we'll see you on NH next weekend? .

Take it easy mate.

Does anyone ride with wrist guards? Would they work or do they just get in the way?

They get in the way, and just make your arm break in a different place. It's just a finger, you'll be fine.

Wrist guard wouldn't have helped. Although the xray LOOKS like its a broken finger, that's actually the hand bone thats snapped, although I have no doubt that I'll be fine.

The surgeon says that they'll wire the bone together and that the wire will stick out of my skin so that they can just pull them out with pliers after 4 weeks!
