Should homeless people have dogs as pets....

Not enough controversy on the board right now....

discuss.

Sure so they can get 65 bucks a month for pet food, etc from welfare and then give the dog scraps whilst drinking more vino...

That's the cynical view.

I personally think everyone should have a dog...the world would be a nicer place.

Yes and no

I do know that some homeless peopleuse them for protection and companionship, which I can understand. But if someone can't afford to look after it properly as in proper VETERINARY CARE, which is very expensive. Animals are just like children in that respect, if you can't afford to look after it properly then you should not have it.

Are you saying homeless people get $65 doggy welfare?

I am not aware of how the welfare system works so I am just curious.

Yup

Last year I spent 3 grand in diagnostics on my cat to find out he has a rare untreatable birth defect in his heart. It was a stretch but as he is the love of my life and I didn't even think about spending it. Now I just have to let him live out the rest of his natural live.

If a homeless person has 3 grand, I think the last thing they would be doing with it is spending it on vet care.

I'm glad the self righteous out there get off on telling people that you should not experience giving hvaing a dog unless you have an +$50k income. That must be a line from the book of life according to conservative pricks. I wonder if they feel better by judging people all the time.

Last I heard from you and others in another thread was that dog's are like family and/or friends and everybody shared these deep connections with dogs. Maybe the homeless person like you said is using the dog in this way. Maybe they found a stray dog and like a homeless person might have a homeless friend they treat like family they treat the dog like family and who's to say that is wrong. Maybe they had the dog prior to becoming homeless and why should they give it up? If it's acceptable for a human to live at that level why not a dog? Maybe since our society cannot afford to take care of the homeless people we should give them away. Lock them up in jail just like the SPCA would do and when no one comes along to claim them we can start popping them off.

And dog's are animals anyway so who cares?

okay, I make far form 50 k a year, but I do make more than a homeless person, welfare provides$325 a month for shelter, and a bit more like $200 for extras, IF they are on welfare thats $6300 a year. Give that head of yours a shake. If the animal gets sick and needs Vet care as my pet did that is half their yearly income. Welcome to Clueless, population you.

And maybe every scenario you have presented is correct, I said yes and no, I do feel people are rewarded from the companionship of a pet but you have to be able to look after it, if they can fine, if not no animals deserve to have health care just as humans do and be looked after. And just maybe we should be doing more to improve the homeless persons situation in the first place.

And a very wise man once said you can judge a society by how it treats its animals. so yes I care.

Btw the SPCA is no longer a Kill Shelter unless of course the animal no longer has any quality of life and has to be put down.

no, they shouldnt. but in our society people are free to do what they like. you cant legislate put an income floor requirement on owning a pet or even having a baby. mind you that doesnt negate the fact that it is, in fact, grossly irresponsible to own a dog/have a baby if you dont have the means to support it.

I'll take a dog over children any day.

Btw, most homeless people take real good care of their dogs and they are part of thir family. The spca and local cops routinely investigate homeless people with pets when someone makes a specific complaint, and they usually discover that the dog is better fed and cared for than the owner.

so welfare moms can have more babies, yet homeless people can't have pets?
Can people on welfare have pets?

imho - a dog with an owner that is homeless but still loves and looks after that dog is way better off than any dog in any shelter that is caged 23 hours a day and denied human contact for most of that time as well. For the record I'm not blaming the shelters, they need to keep the animals safe and minimize the chances of any diseases spreading.

Dogs are social animals. All they need is a little attention, food and love. Pretty fucking easy to accomodate them. One of the easiest and most rewarding relationships you could ask for.
