Supervised kids at NSMBA trail days

CBC Trail Day
October 1, 2006

I like to mountain bike on Mt. Seymour. Last Sunday, my Mum and I went to Mt. Seymour to help maintain and repair one of the riding trails on the mountain. There were 52 other people also helping.

We walked to the bottom of the trail and then hiked up the trail to join the other volunteers. We were asked to help fix an old “rock drop” that wasn’t being used anymore.

It needed a lot of work! We needed to build the landing up with big rocks. We also had to put flat rocks on the top of the jump.
I found tons of those.

At lunch, we had pizza with dip and water, and I won a t-shirt and a really cool hat.

After lunch, we hiked back to the rock drop again and started to fill in all the rocks with special “gold dirt”. To get this kind of dirt, we needed to shovel underneath the black dirt. We filled about 25 huge buckets of dirt and carried them to the rock. They were actually very heavy!

To do our work, we used a shovel, a chainsaw, a pickaxe, a bucket, a hammer, and nails.

When it was done, the drop was as good as new, and riders were really happy that we had worked so hard to fix the drop.

I hiked all the way up the trail to see all of the work that had been done by the other volunteers and helped to carry the tools down the mountain.

I learned that if you work hard, there is a reward – a t-shirt, a hat, pizza, and a fixed up trail for everybody!

^^^ now that's why we need more parents coming out to trail days and supervising thier kids.

That was Jakes show and tell that he wrote up after the trail day.

I think it's pretty damned cool.

Nice work Jake (and Mom)!!!

The LSCR is always thrilled with the results of a NSMBA trail day. Not only do our trails receive quality maintenance but it is inspiring to see riders of all ages and skill levels come together to help preserve the future of their sport and have fun doing so.

A big thanks to all those who came out!

Jake was such a cool little kid. He was so stoked with the T-Shirt.

It is really cool to see the little guys out there enjoying it so much. I mean when else will your mom let you play in the dirt!

Excellent work Jake!
