I've only been shooting fro a year, and i make no claims to be good, but I've boiled my current photography down to a few simple rules.

1 - do i want to remember what i'm shooting? Is what I'm looking at through the vew finder something I want to remember? If it's not, I put the camera back down by my side. 3 - depth of fiield? How much? Basically, if you have one subject, you want shallow depth of field. If you are shooting a scene you want a large depth of field.

4 - White balance and color shift are the most important settings on the camera. get them right. I adjust them for every setting i enter. I adjust them before i even adjust ISO f-stop and shutter speed. I walk up to the nearest white object (t shirt, piece of paper, etc) and snap an out of fucus shot of it so it occupies the whole screen. I set it as white. then I adjust the color shift to ge the mood i want. i go from there.
