Question Has anyone had any experience with a dual crown on Kona's OB hardtail frame from '04?

It's time to get rid of the MZ Race and I'm thinkin of getting the 2005 Boxxer Ride from Pricepoint and I talked to my LBS and they said it would void the warranty and it isnt reccomended and I don't really wanna get a new frame right now cuz I'm broke. So have any of you put a DC on one and if so how'd it go. Oh yeah my frames pretty beat up too so if it cracked it wouldnt be much of a financial loss.

What frame is it? Im not sure what Kona's OB hardtails are.. .im assuming "Out of Bounds" but They didnt have an OB Hardtail line in 04, I had a 2003 Jr.T on my Kona stuff for about 6 months... it was perfectly fine and still is, it was just a bit to tall in the front.

is there a particular reason you feel you need a dual crown? Are you sure you NEED one? or do you just WANT one? Especialy on a hardtail.

Personaly, there are only 2 (that i can think of) hardtail frames that i would even consider puting a dual crown on. Banshee Morphine, and evil imperial. Most anything else will just flat out handle like pure shit, or snap at the head tube.

Get a nice single crown fork. I HIGHLY doubt you'll be able to do much more with a dual crown on a hardtail than a nice single crown.

disagree with what chunk said.
what is the defining feature of HT's that would make them snap at the head tube (except for the morphine and the evil) while a dually of similar strength/design intention would not?
most FR bikes, HT or otherwise, are made really burly at the front end because all forks (SC and DC) are getting longer and longer.

a 170mm 66 and a 170mm 888 are probably about the same ride height, so they wouldn't be much different in terms of ride handling. but they are probably a big jump from however long the MZ race is. in the end, trust your shop, unless you want a surprise landing someday...

alright yeah thanks i think i will go with the dc and if i have too i can just crank the uturn and bring the front end down a little. and im really lookin forward to seein the dc when im headin for a drop, the extra confidence is gonna be sweet.

edit: oh yeah Chunk what would it be about a dual crown fork that would make the headtube snap if not the travel?
edit2: ....nvm i'll post it when i remember what i was gonna say. ok i remember now: the mz race is four inches of elastomer and its really scary when your blastin down a trail and you come up to a drop that you cant remember being there before.

There was a thread on pinkbike about a Kona Shred snapping at the headtube with a 6" sherman Flick....Your Scrap will probably snap too. Don't do it.

wierd the sc fork i would get is the z1 FR III which is 6 inches and i need at least 6" of travel. as you can see in my sig im in the market for a new frame anyway (whether i can afford it or not). maybe i'll just keep it under six inches til i get a new frame or sumthin. o i just had an idea. i'll check mtbr cuz when people list their components they usually put the fork on there. http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Freeride...t_123288.shtml
does anyone know if kona made any big changes to the headtube area since 2004?
edit: sum dude said he put 300mm supermonsters on it.

Good point. However....

Having a hardtail limits what you can do on the trail. WHy put a fork that has such massive capabilities on a frame that cant even keep up?

You have a big dual crown fork that can take 20 foot drops. Great!! now whats it attatched to? A hardtail. And most people would have a hard time droping over 7 feet on a hardtail no matter what is up front.... I just dont see the point.

Like i said in my above post. I doubt youll be able to do much more with a DC than with a SC on a hardtail. (of course their is a small minority of people who can actualy use a DC fork on a hardtail to its full potential, but not that many)

Also, be prepared to own one of the most unbalanced set ups you can have on a bike. 7" in the front, 0" in the back.....

alright i have a noobie question (or it might just be a dumbass question) whats the difference between a short and a tall crown? i imagined what a crown that had more of a bend thingy in it so it was taller and the only reason i can think of for using that would be if you had such a long headtube that moving the lower crown down at all would make the tire rub. actually im not exactly sure what im talking about. so yeah whats the difference?

edit: hey myster chron, that wouldnt be short for chronic in this case would it?
