Spacer needed? Headset - barstem?

I bought a longer stem for my bars but its a little to high/thick to work with my current setup.
Question is I have a 1/4" spacer between my headset and current bar stem, can I remove that and run the the stem right on top of the headset or should I make that spacer a 1/8" and also change the one on top of the stem to 1/8" so the everything will fit just as is it now but with the new stem?

No you don't need a spacer between headset and stem but it's always "better" to have one there.

I personally would run the 1 1/8 spacers.
