Oh great.

I really dont care about this Iraq war B.S. anymore, Its been on the news every waking moment of my life for the last couple years and I just really could not give a flying fuck anymore. But when I see ribbons with a Canadian flag on them and say "Support our troups" on them...well then im pissed. Im pretty disturbed when I try to get some new clothes at the mall and someone whos obviously about to get shipped over to Iraq in full camo, shaved head a beret is walking around in the mall. I meen like what the hell is that? Ive never seen that here before. I wont support a war that was started by the U.S. (yeah i said it), and I wont support a war thats over oil. Canada has no place in that war, and there is no reason for any Canadian citizen to be fighting in any war. Dont call me a hippie or anything I jsut find it rather disturbing thats all, I know Canadians being involved is old news but damn.. wtf..

Are you sure it's all about Iraq? We do have troops in Afganistan(sp?) and many other parts of the world too.

Canada does not have troops in Iraq. Canada is actively involved in peacekeeping in Afghanistan though.

We've got something like 2200 boys (and girls?) in Afghanistan. No one around here refers to it as peacekeeping, though. It's "peacebuilding" on the good days, "nationbuilding" on the better days, and "a freaking waste of time" on the realistic days.

To my knowledge, there's a few Canadians serving on military exchanges that ended up in Iraq for a bit. JTF-2's been in and out on occasion, but they don't exactly walk around the mall in uniform. CSIS and CSE have both sent in teams to Iraq for specific objectives, but again, they're not the type to sport the colours at home (I believe CSIS is officially prohibited from wearing military uniforms, and even though CSE is officially DND, I bet it's hard to find a soldier in there.)

Dude, the Afghanistan peace keeping mission and the war in Iraq are two totally different things. Afghanistan used to be ruled by the Taliban - read as real assholes with no respect for anyone and even less for women and children.

They were overthrown and now Canada is part of an international force trying to help them establish a stable government and stop the human rights abuses that went on for too long.

I'll give you a hint - if you love your mother then you'd hate the taliban. Under their laws myself or any other stranger could put a bullet in her head for making eye contact with a man, or have her stoned to death for not covering her body head to toe including wrists and ankles.

Women were often not allowed medical treatment and no woman was allowed to have a job under taliban rule. So if their husband fucked off with another woman, they had a choice of starving to death quietly or being stoned or otherwise put to death for trying to get a job or begging for food.

Neat fucking place - I don't see why anyone would have a problem with Canada helping get rid of these scum, unless you also have pics of Hitler on your walls.

No, according to your post, they are exactly the same. They were both terrifying regimes that needed to be taken down.

I can't argue that.

I don't really agree with the war in Iraq, think it was started for all the wrong reasons. I do support the efforts in Afghanistan as they are primarily humanitarian driven.

PS - not agreeing with the Iraq war doesn't equal not respecting the troops of any nation there. A soldier's job is to follow orders, the popularity of those orders is irrelevant to the soldier's job.

well, as is said. we`re not in iraq. as far as afghanistan, its not so much a war started by the US, but a war started by a multitude of nations in support of their ally after the worst terrorist act in that countries history, and to bring those who trained and shelter these types to justice. it seems to me as though the modern support the troop movement in recent years has seen a resurgence mainly due to the fact that alot of people dont agree with the war(s) but still thank the troops for doing an immense service to their nation and want them to come home safe and unharmed.

.
The CSIS and CSE types specialty is gathering of info on the enemy, meaning intelligiance. They tend to not wear military type uniforms due to the simple fact they really don't want to look like anything other than a civilian. Apparently it makes meeting informants and such easier.

For the record most of the Canadian military wears a beret. The only exceptions being select units like say the Seaforth Highlanders or the Canadian Scottish Regiment who wear a Tamoshanter. This is general head dress not ceremonial.
