Single Speed on the Shore

Gonna be doing some shore riding on a single speed this summer. For those of you who have done this or currently do this, what is the best setup? Chain? Gear ratio? SS hub? Let me know.

I think you will have a hard time riding up Fromme with only one gear. You may want to reconsider your options.

From someone who's done it, no, not really. Stand up and pedal and it's fine. Your'e faster too.

Search for threads on this topic, I know I personally have been through it about 5 times now.

i suggest a 1:1 gear ratio when navigating the north shore and its trails...the smaller gear in front allows for not snagging it up on "north shore" type stunts...

2:1 is still the best compromise. I've done the SS on the Shore for a long time, and I like that the best. Anything harder and you can't get up the hills. A bit easier like Rossco suggests is pretty good too, but I found it a bit to torquey for a lot of trails.

Something big and fat, KMC something is what I run on my SS bike. Costs about $20 I think

I run a 34-21. 2:1 is fine for most of Fromme but I found it hard for uphill skinnies, Old Buck: BP on Seymour and Joe's on SFU.

Chains (usually) snap because of side loads that come from shifting or running extreme gear combinations (Grannie and 11 tooth cog) which isn't a problem with a perfect chain line (like on an SS). I've run KMC chains but they are heavy and the bushings wear too quickly. Right now I have a Shimano (UN-91?) 6-8 speed chain (a lot of track cyclists use them) and it has been awesome.

I have YET to snap a chain with my SS setups and ive done it on 3 diff bikes. a normal cheep Z chain works for me.. or just a normal sram chain like 970... make sure your chainline is setup nicely also

Yeah the times when I snapped my chains was when I was running a ghetto SS setup which was my 2nd ring up front, and one of the freewheel rings. So yea there was probably a lot of sideways stress since the chainline was off.
Hey Keefer, what are you running for your rear hub on your SS?

Which one worked better for you?
I am currently running an adaptor kit, but I wanna get a full SS hub. Is it worth it to pay the extra money for a full SS hub?
