Post

i've had a new idea recently, for a bare bones super rugged all around 'bike'.
Something that could work well as a public utility, a tool for the population at large.

Frame: .039 wall 4130, tt, dt, ht, st all the same diameter, sealed tubes (no open vent holes)
Fork: built in rake tapered 4130, forged dropouts, threadless, internally threaded for top cap, that fits crankset.
Bottom Bracket: mid - 19mm
Cranks: 4130 2pc, with freewheel thread like a middleburn.
Chainrings: 30t heat treated steel

Pedals: ideas?

Chain: 1/8" stainless
Cogset: heat treated steel
Hubs: g-sport
Spokes: straight guage stainless
Rims: 26" laminated beechwood clincher
Tubes: sealant filled
Tires: 1.25 grooved slicks

Brakes: ideas? i was thinking fixie, but even then it would be hard to get many people on a fixie without at least a front brake.

Seatpost: built in, sealed (so no water gets in the seattube)
Saddle: either brooks style or macneil style, not sure yet

Headset: ideas?

Stem/Handlebars: 1 piece sealed ends, 15degree sweep, rubberized.
Brake Levers: would be built into the bars

extras: all steel parts parkerized, only one size of wrench needed for headset compression, bb, pedals and wheels. same tool to remove front and back sprockets.

the point: something dead simple dead tough, and fairly cheap, to last a very very long time, even without any maintenance whatsoever.

I didn't know it but it looks like someone is doing the same type of thing as that 'do anything' bike i mentioned: http://www.63xc.com/thursday/muttonmaster.htm

same principle and using only off the shelf stock. good on him!

Well I already have what is pretty much my dream all-round bike:

Bullit
66 RC
Sun S-Types on hope Bulbs
Maxxis Bling Bling Duals
RF North Shores/E.13 Guide
Still needs nice brakes though (see sig)

Dream DH race bike:

Morewood Izumi: Large, white, Cane Creek Shock w/Ti spring
RS Boxxer Team: ti springs
E.13 Ali stem
King headset
Easton EA70 bars
BMX grips w/flanges
full Sram XO drivetrain (with some spare carbon rear derrailleurs handy )
Juicy Carbons (again spare Carbon lever blades handy)
Shimano XT cranks
E.13 LG-1 guide and E.13 40T chainring
Wellgo MG-1 pedals
SDG seat/post combo: cut to size
Hope seat clamp: non-QR
Mavic Deemax wheelset: silver
A bunch of tires for different courses
Ti bolts everywhere.

Should be under 40lbs.
