Longest Day Bike Race idea

Just an idea I thought of while climbing up Fromme one day (I may have been delirious at this point however so maybe it's crazy)...

June 21 -> hold a race for the most number of differnt runs obtained between sun up and sun down. You can shuttle or climb. Mtns like Fromme (must climb) you get more points for a run. Mtns further away from the start (say a pub on the NS) you get more points (Eagle, Burke, Woodlot, Vedder - again more points if you must climb vs. shuttle). Whistler BP, Cypress BP not included.

It's kinda an endurance race but more fun. Cannot do the same run twice for any more points (i.e. can't shuttle Neds all day).

Well it's probably crazy but I thought it'd be a fun change from regular races. Being well organized is as important as having good downhill stamina and going super fast does help but may not be the deciding factor.

They do a max vertical ride in Nelson every year. somthing like twelve or thirteen FULL shuttles. More of a group ride thing than any point system. I also believe you have to drink a beer in between runs

how about Shuttle Cypress,- climb fromme, shuttle seymour, climb eagle, climb burke, climb the woodlot, shuttle sumas, shuttle Vedder.

It sounds a little TOO open-ended. Plus who would validate who did what? I could say I climbed Eagle 3 times and in actuality I may have just taken my sweet time doing one route.

Also, using mountains as far away as Woodlot would incorporate car racing too...

I like the idea on Fromme. Climb only, have a few marshals at the top and bottom, either flags or marshalls on the major routes and see who can get the most runs in a day. Sounds like a blast actually!

screw the race format. Hire the huckwagon and perhaps get smoke to take out the Van have a massive shuttle orgy. No Points, No Timing. Last man standing wins

I recall reading an article a couple years back about a group of guys that did something similar: Seymour, Fromme, Cypress, Squish, Whis & Pemby.

It's doable if you keep the group smallish & have your bikes dialed (and have a decent stash of spare parts).

Yes you'd need some helpers on trail entrances to score individuals - harder to do with lots of mountains I guess. Also would be better with small teams. Maybe you just need to take a picture of each trail (digital) you do? It might be possible to cheat but all you win is bragging rights (any prizes should be random draw and perhaps best crash etc.)

Mostly I thought'd be fun - ride until you drop, see if you can outlast others and ride more trails on the longest day of the year.

Conversley we should organize the largest night ride group on Dec. 21 (the darkest day) to celebrate all days getting brighter from then on.

They both sound fun. Organize something and people will come out.

I won't be able to make the 21st one though cause I'll be in (ugh) Toronto...

you have one person at the top of al l the mountains that aren't shuttleable, and give them give a bunch of bandanas with that mountyain's name on it, get them to give one out to each rider that gets to the top, whoever has the most at the end of the day wins. Have it end at sfu for a massive night ride down burnaby

I don't like the idea of running massive shuttles up Fromme. Fromme should be climbed - keeps the trails in better shape. You can already shuttle Seymour and Cypress.

Since it would be hard to hit all trails on even 3 mountains it could be done using a few people on each of the 3 NS mountains. To verify everyone rode to the bottom coloured tags could be used (held in a container, one for each trail head and trail end). You collect a tag at the start of a trail then at the bottom get the corresponding end tag. Then you just need a few people to patrol the trail heads and ends to prevent "theft" of tags.
