Hayes Hfx9 - Headache

I see these hfx9 everywhere, but I can't belive I'm the only having a headache because of them... First of all I can't align the calipers, it's just impossible, even when I asked for help at Steed Cycles they couldn't do much...

but the worst part is that the pads compounds seems to be vanishing! I bought a pair of pads for the front brake and around 6-8 rides at fromme they seem to be a lot worn-out, these are Hayes original Metallic pads, what can be happening?

PS: I use the HFX-9 HD 2005 with 8" v-cut rotors

no, they are not because i cant align the caliper! the rotors are not perfect but they are OK, and I always unbent them when is really bad.

I used to have shimano Deore m525 and did the same thing, and I could align them!

For those who ride Hayes, how long does your pads last normally?

The same shit happend to me, I put in a brand new set of hayes pads and after a weekend of riding they were more than 30% worn. I only use my brakes lightly too! I was really pissed, I mean $100 for pads and they die that fast?. I now use koolstop pads, they are only $15 for a set and they work aot better than hayes stockers. Im thinking its the huge vent holes in the hayes rotors that wear the pads so badly. I now have a Shimano XT4 pot on the front and its been perfect(other than me splooging oil all over it).

How old are your rotors? If they're grooved, they'll wear pads fast. The fact that you can't allign your calipers suggest to me that your rotors are the cause of your problem.

Also, this type of weather is very hard on pads.

^ I think he meant like if rotor is quite old.. its surface shouldnt be smooth so you cant see the groove on rotor surfaces or feel it cuz they are micro.. but it wears ur pads out fast.

I can go 6 months without too much trouble on one set of pads.

Also whoever's paying $100 bones should drop by or check out MEC, they are sellling them for $22 cdn a pair, good ol mec pricing it appropriately not like the monopolizing sharks at some lbs'

wild guesses

Look to your frame tabs, fork tabs and adaptors. Use logic. Did you say that you had this problem with different brakes on the same bike? Maybe it's the bike, not the brakes. I have seen many frames and forks where the caliper mount tabs were not straight. And they were not straight in a way that the adjusting slots in the caliper would not be able to handle. This means that the pads rub all the time, and often on the metal of the caliper body itself. This is far more common in the rear, as the brake tabs are often welded on. Forks are usually a little more accurate, and have fewer of these problems because the tabs are part of a casting. Often the adaptor to mount the caliper to the frame is incorrectly machined. This can be replaced.

A GOOD bike shop should have a tool from Hope which allows them to reface the disk tabs accurate to the hub. A GOOD bike shop will know whether to use this tool or whether the tabs can be tweaked back to straightness. A GOOD bike shop will figure this out for you.

monoppolizing sharks eh?

the only reason mec can price them that high is because of the quanitys of stuff they sell, and the quanitys they buy. Lbs's dont make much money bike parts. most of the cash is made in repairs.. i wouldnt call it monopolizing..

think about it.. if they sell you a $80 part, they are only making about $35-45 if they are to do $80 worth of work on a bike they make 80$. more money would be coming from repairs no?

no, your theory is way off. how long does someone have to work on a bike to make $80?
