it's official, 9 speed suck!
Broke a chain today, first time since I swapped out the 9 speed crap for 8 speed back in the fall of 2000. that

I think we're going to have to ask the audience about 9 speed....
Looks like the audience would 'hit it'

I've broken one 8 speed chain and one 9 speed chain in my life. I've ridden 9 speed for 6 straight years now. That's DH racing too. I really don't see the problem with 9 speed. I'm not a guy who tinkers with his derailleur's adjustment very often (err, never), I don't skip gears, I don't drivetrain break parts (and I'm a hammer head). I tend to shift under light loads, but not all the time.

HMMMM I don't know. it's kind of weird I know guys who thrash crank arms and peddles but have no problem with 9 speed. me I kill chains. I just don't get it, but I do know my self and 9 speed are not ment to be. it broke going down hill fer crist sakes !@!!!
P.S. i'm clean shifting. I don't mash gears at all.

arguments could go on for days with stories of people success and failure with 9 speed. Myself, ive been lucky with my 9 speed. There isnt one explanation for why some people have better luck with 8. Alot of times they really arent that much abusive on the stuff (at least they claim that) so i think its just luck.

Alot of chain breaking issues can relate to the way it is installed. If you use a shimano pin or a Power link on the respective chains you will greatly decrease the likely hood that it will break.
If your still breaking chains and they are installed correctly you might want to check out your cassette and chain rings or your derailer adjustments as these could contribute to a chain breaking. Chains, 8 or 9 speed should hold up to many long miles of riding with out breaking. Lots of people are on 9 speed, it is reliable, and will be arround untill we are force fed 10 speed. |

I run 8 speed on all my bikes, personaly I find they take alot longer to wear out. Also they seem to do better when the derailer hanger has been bent or your derailer is pooched.
Still break em though |

You're right, I know of guys who break shit just by pedalling. I once bent a set of XTR cranks from it. |

I've been riding 8 speed Shimano for the last 3yrs because I was crushing the 9 speed chains before that. I'm 220 Ibs and was breaking them pedaling. But just got a 9 speed Sram system with the nickel plated chain on my new bike and no problems yet. If I start breakin chains again I'll go back to 8 speed. By the way SRAM kicks Shimano's ass for performance. And you can get the X7 shifters in an eight speed version. Very cool.

I ride with my 2 buddies almost every weekend (shore, SC, etc.) We all weigh within 10lbs of each other, similar skill levels/riding styles. I am on 8 speed, they are on 9. I have yet to break a chain, they broke theirs twice each in the last 3 months. Go figure.
