Wheel building

I need to find out the right spoke length for the wheel i am going to build. I know the ERD is 532mm but i dont know the specs of my hub. It is a slightly older XT rear hub, model number FH-M756. I tried looking on the internet for a database of hubs, but i could not find one with this hub. So i guess im gonna have to use a spoke lenth calculator (which needs the specs of his hub to be used)

ERD= 532
Hub model number= FH-M756
Spoke length=????

Any kind of help you can offer is apreciated!

Wow salami, thanks a ton! This will be my first time building a wheel so i want everything to be perfect. BTW, how did you know the specs? where did you get them?

http://bikeparts.com/search_results.asp?ID=SH30681

They have the specs as:
flange diameter: 61mm
center to flange: 31.7mm left, 21.1mm right

That would give you 256.7 left, 255.6 right.

http://www.dtswiss.com/spokescalc/Calculator.aspx
DT Swiss have the specs as:
flange diameter: 61mm
center to flange: 32.15mm left, 18.55mm right

That would give 256 left, 255 right.

No problem. Building wheels is a lot of fun until your good friends find out you are good at it and ask you to build them for free.
Go here to get the program I used: http://www.damonrinard.com/spocalc.htm

Download the Spocalc (full strength version). It has a database for a lot of hubs and rims. I found it there. Since a lot of the hubs and rims are more XC oriented I have added some of the hubs and rims I have built to my database. You will need to have Microsoft Excel to run the porgram.

BTW I edited my above post. I was very tired when I ran the calculations and forgot to ask how many hole rims. Switch's numbers are correct for a 32 hole 3 cross if that is what you are building.

Spokecalc is an excellent tool, but it hasn't been updated in quite some time (i.e. it didn't have the 756 hub in it).

The amount of crosses is determined by how many times a spoke on one flange crosses other spokes on the same flange. So look at a spoke on your bike, and see how many times it crosses over or under other spokes on the same flange as it.

4 cross has just a teeny bit more strength with the pedaling and braking forces. And on a 3 cross it is alot easier to replace a broken spoke so. 3 cross is quite a bit more common though.

I built myself a 36 hole 4X wheel using a standard XT hub wrapped in a Singletrack rim. It's taken two seasons of ht downhilling in Whistler, so I'm all for the 4X!

Apparently a 36 holse 4X design is stronger because the forces applied to it are dissapated more because the 4X is more tangential (root: tangent) than 3X. I don't really know what that means though...

yea, i heard that it doesnt make a HUGE difference though. Im sure it helped some, but not a ton. The biggest factor in a wheel is the build. A quality build with crappy parts can last just longer than some high ent stuff with an OK build.

4x is more common on 36+ hole hubs. 32 hole hubs should use 3x.
