I wrote a long response to this post but finally gave up when I realized that it's pointless to open a dialogue with someone who can't accept an obvious bias in journalism when it's smack in their faces.

Here's the cole's notes:

The black dude was 'looting', the white couple was 'finding'. There's 4 feet of water over 80% of the city, do you think this young white couple left the money on the counter ( I highly doubt the store was open and staffed at the time). Also, the people that write the captions for the shots in press agencies are rarely the photographers themselves, so there were probably not there either.

There's a good chance you are right, but the fact is you don't know, and you can't know. When you make accusations without knowing the facts, it gives you something in common with a bigot who could have written those captions.

come on you have to be kidding it is like the same pic the black guy is looting and the white guy is finding. if we are there or not has no bearing on the captions of those phots cause the guy who took the shots wasnt at the grocery store either.

I met a guy traveling who was in the isreali army who had seen photos of himself fighting on CNN three years after he had gotten out. Late breaking footage type crap.

He also had stories of reporters paying kids to throw rocks at them so they could get the footage.

wow, you always play the devil's advocate but this is just stupid. new orleans is CLOSED. there are no shops open! read the fucking news and see yourself if you want facts.

are you really so ignorant that you are suggesting that couple fled OUT of new orleans to a non flooded place where a store was open and them waded/swam back to the flooded area? and that the caption writer knew this?

you have lost any little bit (had VERY little before anyways) of credibilty you have ever had.

This is a lot broader than you seem to comprenend. Assuming the captions were actually writen with knowledge of the scenario: The caption does not say that the white couple 'purchased' the bread, it says they 'found' it. If they bought the bread one wouldn't say it was 'found'.

So what's the difference between 'looting' and 'finding'? One can be seen as a serendipitous act, and the other a crime. Just like the people in the pics, they're both the same, but the differences in how they're percieved is like black and white.

Now suppose that you're correct and the white couple bought the bread, and the black dude stole his food. Understand that there are thousands of pics from every pro and wannabe photojournalist in the area coming into the news services. These news agancies have to look through all of them to find a pic of someone looting, and someone 'borrowing', so why did they choose the black guy to represent the looters and the white couple to represent the 'borrowers' (for lack of a better term)? Like all media, they profit and thrive from perpetuating the status quo which includes racial stereotypes.

As far as sharing attributes with bigots, I'm trying to view all people the same unless I knew the circumstances instead of with bigoted eyes that condem a man to be thought of in a poor light just for the colour of his skin. I can't see how that is bigoted.

You'd do well to not throw that term around so loosely.
