XT hub on a steelhead?

I have an Xt hub laying around my garage obviosly with a quick release. Will I be able to use this on the steelhead I just bought on ebay?

As my screen name suggests i am mostly an XC rider. I have never had to worry about compatability with any of my parts because standard Q/R is the norm in XC. But in freeriding/DJ/downhill, i know from keeping tabs on these boards that there are a couple of different spacings and sizes of hubs out there.

i cant wait to get it in the mail!!!!

the spacing is correct, you may find that the QR axle wants to slip forward or back in the dropouts, if that gets annoying i hear its is fairly simple to put a bolt on axel in a Xt hub!
congrats on your purchase!

I am soooo excited. I just dusted off my old XT cranks and I am gathering the rest of the parts so that i can ride it the same day I get it in the mail!

Dirt jumping and tooling around my college campus.
Keep in mind this is a super budget build.

- XT hubs on X317 (i know its a cross county wheelset but they are sitting around in the garage)
- Marazocchi EXR comp (took it from my friends stock P1 for $20)
- Older generation XT cranks and BB
- Single speed
- some no name stem and handle bar combo
- the seat off my 24" cruiser
- any pedals i can find lying around the house
- hayes mech. brakes off the same friends P1

Priority upgrades
- rhyno lite rims (this is the most urgent upgrade)
- Some inexpensive Wellgo pedals
- Probably a Dirt Jumper or Psylo off of ebay

I think I would go for the psylo because I am a very light rider (140 lbs) who isnt very abusive. That, and the psylo would make for a decent trail fork.

The QR will be awful on the horizontal dropouts. It will slip a lot.

Get a solid 10mm axle. Your cones and locknuts will slip right onto the new axle, so all you need is the axle.

Even if you can't get one for free, it should be pretty cheap.

Invest in a nice set of cone wrenches (15 and 17mm for the back); they should be around 10 dollars each. Then go to Park Tool's site and follow the tutorial for how to rebuild a hub.

Once you learn, it's so easy that you'd smack yourself if you had paid labour for it.

Oh I have overhauled many hubs myself. I guess you could say I used to be an assistant bike mechanic last year at my local shop.

The only reason i didnt know how to answer my own question that i just asked you guys, is because freeride bikes are virtualy non-existant here in texas. Every bike you see here has either Q/R or its a BMX bike.

Hell, Ive only seen a dual crown fork twice in real person here in texas. (ive seen plenty at other places like durango, and telluride)

I've run this setup quite a bit, single speed dirtjumper (read; high torque) and have not had any slippage issues. I agree that a Bolt on will be better, but QR will work just fine.

I appreciate it though! I am 90% sure I can get one for free. If not, I can think of many shops that can hook me up for a good price.

Wow, you must have one hell of a quick release. I've tried it one a couple different bikes (with shimano QRs) and with ANY hard pedaling the wheel would torque sideways.

try to buy a lockon QR...

it makes a huge difference in horz. dropout frames if u cant get a solid axle conversion for your hub...

http://www.cambriabike.com/shopexd.asp?id=10463

something like this...

i used a set of these style QR's when i had my Azonic DS1 (horz drpouts)... the rear disc used to cause the wheel to twist in teh dropouts when i used a reg QR. but when i bought the lockon style it never happened again...
