Looking for a bike for my gf

i finaly convinced her to buy a bike (i told her we could spend more time together then. who woulda known it was that easy ). so i'm thinking get her something not too big n heavy but something that she can learn on and after a while join me on the trails with. something along the lines of a Sasquatch. she doesn't want to spend too much on it (less than a grand me thinks) but she also wants something that isn't a piece of trash.
any thoughts?

she's skeptical cuz she can't "ride off the sidewalk without using a driveway" so there's alot of learning to be had. but i told her that if it came to either going out to fromme or wherever without her or being with her and teaching her to ride then i'd rather be with her. *huge brownie points* so now she's super stoked about getting a bike

^^^^^^^^ if what you write is truth, then burly is not what she needs. Teach her to ride smooth. A 1hun would be fine.

Taking her to Fromme is a mistake if she can't ride off a curb. Take her to UBC, SFU go easy on her, and be patient or you will create alot of negative points for yourself.

yup.. probably what sideshow said... but my first ride was down seymour on a pos with no suspension/back brakes and i loved it... she might get hooked easily. if you really feel the need for burly she can buy my bighit

It is very important not to take her somewhere that will scare her. New riders are easily put off forever. I know this from a few personal experiences. You are not out of the woods yet, just because she has indicated a desire to try riding and getting a bike!

There are some good suggestions for a new mtb'er on here.

yup , make sure you find out what HER goals are for riding before you get all gung ho and start dragging her out to the places YOU like to ride , because that could kill the whole project before it even gets underway .

start as easy as you possibly can , let her set the pace of progression , and encourage everything she does .

there are some great trails here in whistler around lost lake . then you could go up the mountain and hit the easy stuff and the skills park . then you could go back to the hotel room and f*ck .

just an idea . . . . .

Check out www.womensonly.com They offer beginner women's classes in a low stress, low testosterone environment. It also introduces her to a bunch of other women with similar skills to ride with.

Cap's Westwood had some 04 Sasquatch's going for fairly cheap.

just pick up something practical, and maybe teach her to ride abit on your bike before you buy her something. Also, dont take her to the gnar plaes rite away start uber easy even if it bores the hell out of you and work your way up to the good trails slowly or she will loose interest fast. I've taught two woman the basics of riding and to be honest with patience, always complimenting their progression and only slightly hinting how to help they can improve and will pick up on it fast and be ready to rip down the trails with you in no time...also you may have said she should get a bike to spend more time together, but if she were to ride with other woman as she ;earned they tend to work really well with each other...as for those classes...well they are kind of expensive and my mom took one and said it was a waste of her money as what she learned there I taught her in a day..but if you arent patient it is good for its money i guess

Once you get a ride under her try coming out to the delta watershed. Lots of easy rolling singletrack, short climbs, and a bunch of cool stunts for you to show off on to keep you from being bored. All the stunts are easily bypassed as well so no issues there.

I second this Idea. My girlfriend took a couple of courses and loved it, and is thinking of taking anouther this year. She made a couple of good riding friends and had alot of fun.

Remember, when purchasing a bike burly=heavy, most women do not have the upperbody strength in the begining to lug a big bike around. Think lighter not stronger, trust me she will ride her bike alot easier, and lighter than you ever would.
