Crist's reply...
Dear Sirs:
I am forwarding this email message for your information to make you better aware of the issues. Ernie Crist. -----Original Message----- From: Akalynnbrown@aol.com [mailto:Akalynnbrown@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 3:30 PM To: Mayor and Council - DNV Subject: Mountian Bikes/User Conficts and Envir. Damage North Vancouver District Council February 3, 2005 Re: Mountain Bikes on the North Shore (BC) Dear Mayor and Council, I am the Vice President and Deputy National Trail Coordinator of Equestrian Trails Inc., Corral 38. Our organization's concerns are trail preservation, trail access and public safety for the trail users. We have worked closely for many years with various environmental groups with similar concerns to preserve trails for hiking and equestrian use. I have been serving in this capacity for over 15 years. I served on the Mountain Bike Task Force for Los Angeles Rec. and Parks for several years. We all came to the conclusion that legs and wheels don't mix. Mountain bikers, by the very nature of this extreme sport, present both a physical hazard to the peaceful use of trails, and an environmental hazard as well. The trails become the exclusive use of the mountain biker as both hikers and equestrians abandon the trails due to fears for their safety and the disruption of the tranquil use of the land. The myth of "multi-use" trail quickly reveals itself to be a single use trail for an aggressive and vocal group. As another hiker has mentioned, it is not a family activity. Look at a mountain biking magazine to see who falls into the real demographic. It's real appeal is speed and the adrenaline rush. Furthermore, another aspect must be looked at. Once a wheeled vehicle is allowed on a trail, it opens the door to other versions of recreational wheeled transportation...the mountain board, the trail inline skates, and most recently the "diggler", a motor powered combination of a skateboard and a scooter. All these vehicles are designed to traverse rocks, tree roots, dirt, and the usual obstacles of a trail causing considerable damage as they travel. We are not against bike use for transportation, or recreation in appropriate areas, but mountain bikes on unpaved dirt trails used by hikers and equestrians is often a recipe for disaster. All over the U.S. where the use of shared trails have been instituted, there is now strong movements for closing the trails to bikes due to ecological damage and user conflicts. The mountain bikers need their own area, classified as an ORV, as it is incompatible with and dangerous to other trail users. Sincerely, Lynn Brown (323) 876-6858 |

Oh brother, Ernie's rounded up every nutbar on the continent and put them in his corner.
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, starring Ernie Crist, Lynn Brown, MJ Vandeman and Monica craver. It's an all star cast folks. Don't miss it.

go to the Alpine Study meetings and give your input. moving forward, this is what matters... we do not need to debate with Ernie, it solves nothing as is like talking to a brick wall as you know.

Fine - seperate Hikers, Horse Riders and Mountain Bikers - it's done in the UK, France (VVT) and I'm sure it's done else where in the world - what's the bloody problem?
It seems these 'experts' views of the 'world' are basically limitted to what's been carried out in the USA. P.S. I've seen family's on the trails of Fromme. Last edited by Danksi; 02-25-2005 at 06:42 AM. |

My letter...not yet sent...yet...
I am going to, however. I am sending it to all councellers, the NS Snooze, the Province, and the Sun.
Dear Councilor Crist. The included letter was forwarded to me by a colleague from the United States as a response to a letter he sent to North Vancouver councilors, you included. Gregg Springer is a very frequent visitor to the Lower Mainland. If he does not stay at my house, he is staying at the Holiday Inn on the Seymour Parkway in North Vancouver. He travels to Canada not only to visit with my family and I, although I am sure he considers that a bonus. He travels to Canada for the express reason to mountain bike on the local trails, and consequently spend USD in Lower Mainland (and primarily North Vancouver) businesses. To reply to a letter from a frequent tourist to the DNV in the matter you did is beyond reproach. He stated valid concerns. You replied by forwarding a letter written by a special interest group based in Los Angeles, California. A state and city as far removed from the realities of British Columbia as possible. I am not going to bother dissimilating the inaccuracies contained within the attached letter. I will leave that to the other people I am sure you sent that very same reply to. My worry is the seemingly lack of concern for the financial viability of your fair city. Mr. Crist, I feel that you do not take Mr. Springer |

Good. I DARE council to even TRY to ban mountain biking on Fromme. It just can't and WON'T happen! There is just too much business based around the actvity for it to be a feasable idea.
As long as council takes recreation over development, I don't see how there will be a problem. I think some things just get blown WAY out of proportion.

Guys - clue in. I doubt very much that Ernie even reads any of the letters he receiveds any more. He probably just reads enough to say to himsefl "Another rotten biker!"; then he sends his latest canned reply.
He's the wrong guy to be directing efforts toward. you'll never engage him in intellegent dialogue. IMHO, of course. |

As an ex-communist, does Crist even care about the economic ramifications of his policies?
Somehow I doubt it. |
