Since the NHL is going down the crapper...
this is a perfect opportunity to develop a tier-based world-caliber professional hockey league in Canada only. We carry the title of the birthplace of hockey so why not run our own league? Structure it similar to that of the English Premier League with a Premier League, Div. 1, Div. 2 etc. with relegation and promotion at the end of each season. Hypothetically speaking (based on urban populations)....
Premier Vancouver Toronto Montreal Ottawa Calgary Winnepeg Edmonton Quebec City Division 1 Victoria Hamilton London Kitchner Regina Saskatoon Halifax St. John's Division 2 Oshawa Kelowna Trois Rivieres Sydney Kingston Abbotsford Thunder Bay Chicoutimi Play weekly division games on Saturday nights and weekly inter-division games on a week night just like they do in European Cup and Champions League qualies. Can you imagine a Div 2 team like Abbotsford knocking off the Leafs in an inter-division tourey's like the FA cup format? Teams, players and owners would take notice. I'm curious to know if Hockey Canada has a contingency plan for when the NHL finally gives up the ghost. Let's face it, Gary, the owners and the NHLPA have taken the fun out of upper tier pro hockey. Kiss, the Panthers, Hurricanes, Ducks, Thrashers and Oilers goodbye within five years and the rest of the league by the end of the next CBA. Flame away... |

I think that's an awesome idea. However because there won't be any lucrative US market teams and CBC is poor, the players will have to play under a $150,000 per year salary cap.

There should be a few American teams, in places like Colorado, Minny, and Detroit where they actually care about hockey.
BTW: There should be a team in Kamloops too.

Their not negotiating. I can't believe they call this negotiating. One side comes to the table. Salary cap. The other side comes. No salary cap. Its like to baboons going at it. Granted it is the owners money that pays the players, but its the players talents that bring in the revenues.

looks to me like there is going to be hockey this season. my money is on the two sides breaking down before the end of wednesday and getting a deal done. i can't wait to see a pre-playoff playoff of 24 or so games to race to the end of the season. personally, i think they should shorten the regular seaso any ways. but yea, i'm counting on them playing at the start of march.
