New Life to an older Ipod.
Well I have had my trusty Ipod for a few years now (It's a 2g - 10G). It has loads of airmiles and even more Trail Miles. It is scratched and beat, but works flawlessly.
The issue I was having was that after all the years, the battery was dying (well dead really), it would only get less than 2 hours of run time on a charge. I had tried the run it down and fully charge it thing, and it was just not cutting it. I was getting used to the idea of buying a new Ipod, sometime down the road when I had a spare $500 bones (not anytime soon). Then I read this review of a new Battery for older Ipods, and low and behold I find out that the Apple store I frequent carries the brand. For $59 I bought a new replacement battery from Newer Technology (www.newertech.com) The package comes with tools to open 1st or 2nd gen Ipods and the new battery, as well as instructions for the disasembly of the Ipod. The claims were that not only could you breath more life into an older Ipod, but because the battery was a 2100mAh instead of 1400mAh it would last longer. Seems reasonable I thought. The original Battery has never lasted more than 4 hours. I figured it would be really cool to get 6 or 8 hours of a charge, maybe 10 if I was lucky. I heard that a few people were getting 16+ hours out of these batteries. Well here is the bottom line. After installing the battery and charging it to full capacity, I decided to run it on continuous play until it died. I set the volume to 50% and loaded my full Song list and let it rip at midnight yesterday (well this morning technically). I went to bed at about 4am and it was still going strong. I woke up at 12 noon and the battery meter was reading about 25%. I though, ok here comes the fast drain of the last bar of charge. By 6PM the Ipod was still going. The last bar of battery life dropped about that time. The Ipod continued to run with no battery level for an additional 2 Hours. At 8:07pm this evening it finally shut off. 20 HOURS and 7 Minutes after i started it!** to say that i was impressed was an understatement. (** Interesting sidenote...I got to "C" in my song list after 20 hours of playing continuously) So for all of you older Ipod owners that want some more range ,or for you guys looking for deals on Ebay, this battery might be the solution you are looking for. |

That's a great tip Jay. With that much better battery life, it would be definitely worth the upgrade cost even if the existing battery is still fine.
I seem to remember reading that you're supposed to send those Ipods in for a battery replacement, and it was expensive. Was/Is that the case?

Jay - when do you ever have time to listed to your ipod, when your cell phone is always stuck to your ear?

I believe the Apple replacement is $99...way more than the 3rd party battery.
Pete, I listen to the Ipod all teh time, especially at Whistler...oh is that a sore spot? I would hate to think you miss riding the shore and whistler every weekend. The Ipod rules for flow and Chi. If I could throw my cell phone in the ocean, I would be a happy guy. I am looking at a new phone with a blue tooth headset so you bitches won;t complain anymore, I'll just wear it under teh full face, you'll never know....

He is crazy, so it's no biggie.
NO I'm not bitter about you having Whistler. After all, even if it opened tomorrow, what would you throw your leg over? It would be embarassing if you got beaten up trying to steal your wife's bike :lo: Not bitter at all - I can throw the ipod in my back pocket and hit up a nice road ride up through the hills here, or pull out the hardtail and snake through the trails, scaring the cows on my way through their fields. blah blah I used it XC skiing in sun valley over xmas, too. To be honest, I like the idea of listening to music while doing a cardio workout, but not so much for freeride or downhill skiing. However, I haven't tried it for a while, and for doing one of those on my own, I can definitely see the appeal - it's just I'm rarely on my own when doing either. |

the new ones are pretty durable. I have catapulted my iPod Mini across pavement many times. even dropped it in a puddle. (granted i got it out pretty quickly... but still)

fwiw newer tech has high capacity (also ~20 h) replacement batteries for 1G ipods for $40 USD. perhaps this is the same product translated into canadian dollars, although the exchange rate is nowhere near 1.50

Something like this is TOTALLY gonna happen... But back on topic...I also get 8-10 hours out of my battery, and thats at about 80% volume, with the EQ set on Jazz (deep bass and clear high tones), and backlight on 5 seconds.
