A thought occurs.....(Hockey related)

Unless my recollection of hockey history is mistaken I'm pretty sure the NHL doesn't have any legal ownership of the stanley cup.

When Lord Stanley had the cup made he decreed that this cup would be contested for by the most skilled hockey teams and this was way before the NHL existed.

So having said that what's to stop some north american junior league from saying "Hey our league has the highest level of play right now, we want to play for the stanley cup in our playoffs."

In accordance with Lord Stanleys wishes I think they would have the legal right to do so. I don't think he would have wanted his cup to have a blank spot on it for the 2004-2005 season.

Discuss.

I think it may be under the stewardship of the NHL though.

no, the NHL does have legal ownership. the people that were in charge of it gave the ownership to the NHL in like '56 or something. don't bother about emailing OTR, this was already a story on That's Hockey.

Some dudes in Quebec had this idea weeks (months?) ago.
I think it's a good one though. Don't let politics get in the way of the game.

What if the NHL were to disband, then what would happen to the cup?

I have no idea. It's possible the NHL would sell the rights, but more likely, IMO, that the owners would start their own league, keeping the rights to the Cup.
