Budget frame

Ugh, i think for next year, I'm definitely going to need a new frame, something that isn't a cross country frame.

I'm already looking at the 04 hucker frame and I just saw an ad for a 04 Desert dueler 66 frame. One is aluminum, one is cromo (right?) so what's better?

Also, what other frames should I consider. My budget is $200-300 new or really nice used frame...

?

It's not working for me but I have seen some good deals on frames there. There was an Azonic chromo frame for around $300 I think. I dont think you will have much of a choice on new frames with that price range.

You'd have a ton of options if you went used. It's a bad seller's market so you'd be in the driver's seat. I couldn't get $125 for my used '01 P.3 w/ disc tabs and it was in great shape. Used hardtails are usually a safer bet than full squish cuz there's no moving parts to get f-ed up by a previous hack owner. You'd have cash left over for a fork or something too.

i had an '02 desert dueler, it wasn't bad at all. lifetime warranty on the frame, too. oryx has gone under i think though, so that might be a factor.

personally, i would go for steel for a hardtail, but it's all personal preference.

why does everyone who has no chance of breaking an aluminum frame think a big heavy steel frame is the better choice?

I used to ride a steel DMR, and wasn't happy with it at all. I would have much rather had the exact same frame design in aluminum.

Some people talk about "ride quality", but the only difference I ever felt between my old Kona Stuff, and newer DMR, was insane weight factor.

Mind you I hadn't been riding for very long at the time... maybe it was just me?

Check out my sig, the price is pretty negotiable. It's a nice frame in great shape.

Steel vs Aluminum is no difference. i have ridden a Minuteman and a 2003 125 in the past, and frankly, I prefer the 125. It's all preference though, for sure. You can get a pretty nice used frame for cheap because there's good deals about on new frames like the steelhead.

we are a couple alum hardtails here, and one is stiffer than the next. the two steel hardtails we have are the same way.

it comes down to what type of riding are you looking to do....

for 300$ you can get qute a nice frame. Now that the 05s are getting picked up by everyone, look for last seasons hardtails going up for sale.

I'll be doing all sorts of riding on that thing. I plan on going to whistler this year on it...it's more that I need something with some good stand over height and better geometry designed for freeriding, I guess. Kinda hard to do drops with a cross country bike

Cough cough 15" 2002 Norco Torrent, MADE for freeriding, normally a $700 frame, down to however low you can bargain me! It's in real good shape cuz it never gets used.

If you're interested

My personal opinion is to stay away from the matrix. I rode one temporarily, it was definitely a cheap feeling bike, geometry wise I guess. Maybe just different, who knows. My epinion.

Wes: the dmrs are real light for a cromoly frame, a dmr-like frame in aluminum would snap for freeriding.....
