power supply issue?

FOr the last 2 weeks or so, my computer will turn of very suddenly for no apparent reason. Like the power goes out or something.
THen when I try to turn it back on nothing happens, it's like the power button doesnt work.
I have to Flick the switch on the back of the power supply and then hold down the power button of a few seconds then flick the switch on the back, back to on, then it will turn back on.
WTF is wrong here?

or the computer is shutting down because it is overheating. Check your fans/heatsink to make sure that they are clear.

if you are running windows xp it could be a OS problem. there is a little box somewhere in systems prefs that should be unchecked. if any fatal error(or windows its probably not that fatal, btw) it will shut off the computer. usually it automatically unclicks. if its not that, then i would say either the power bar, a short. unlikely the psu would do that with out the nice smell of burning wires.

first figure out what kinda of mobo you have in your computer box, then google mobo(motherboard) monitor and go to the home site. find if you mobo is supported for there proggie. install yadda yadda yadda, and see what you have for a abeint case temp as well as a CPU temp. that could tell you lots. post results back hear, along with the CPU you are using and mobo and someone should be able to tell you if you are in a healthy temp range

I take it your motherboard is made in Taiwan. Take a look at all the capacitors on your motherboard. If one is slightly swollen, just chuck the motherboard out and get a new one. It's screwed and will only get worse until it stops working all togerther. I had an ECS K7S5a do this to me a couple months ago.

The Japs played a little game of industrial sabotage with the Taiwanese manufacturers a couple years ago, all the capacitors they made during this time will eventually stop working way before any other capacitors normally would.

We have soooo many computers at the office that are failing because of bad capacitors.

You're in the comox valley right?

take your tower over to the guys at Tweakers and they'll help get you organized.. sometimes it needs a new powersupply - other times just removing and reinsterting everything in the tower will fix your problem.

Go to a computer store and get it cleaned out. The fan's are probably plugged with dust or something and its causeing it to overheat.
