Question Hadley hubs & rear hub setup

I bought a used set of wheels a couple months ago (they were practically brand new), including Hadley Hubs front and rear, and Mavic D321 rims.

I have noticed that there is quite abit of friction in the rear hub. With my bike on a stand I can give the rear wheel a spin and it stops after 4-5 revolutions. My old XT rear and D517's would spin for 20+ revolutions before coasting to a stop.

I cant hear any bearing noise, and the wheel spins true, I have removed the disk caliper, so I know it isnt a disk rubbing.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Or things that I should look at to try and fix the problem.

As it is, when I ride the bike, it actually feels like the brakes are on just a touch.

Thanks for any advice.

Have Fun

Fuckd internals id say your going to have to take apart the rear hub to make sure the wholethings in order and if somethings broken then theres your problem probably.

possibly that insides are messed up, and you need new bearings installed.

go to a shop that deals hadley hubs, get bearings for 30-50bux range, for those nice hubs it is worth the money.

Any recommendations for good shops that carry Hadley hubs in the Vancouver area?

I wouldn't worry about it. If there is no bearing play (ie: wheels are tight) and things feel smooth, I'd just ride on.

I know Hadley hubs inside out. They are super basic, just big sealed cartridge bearings, and you can source all the bearings from your local industrial bearing shop. There are no "internals" to be screwed up, just big heavy duty bearings.

They are tight, smooth bearings. If things are smooth, there is nothing to worry about.

Hope that helps.

he spins his wheel and gets 4-5 revolutions and you're saying he should leave it? 4-5 spins is bruuutal I would not accept that. My XT spins like 1000 times before it stops (ok maybe that's a hyperbole but it just goes on forever) It would be like lightly applying the brake uphills and while manualing and stuff.

If you aren't confident opening it up and seein what's wrong I would suggest takin it to a shop and see if it needs bearings or w/e

..I guess it depends on how hard he is spinning it.

Just trying to help, you can ignore my contributions if you feel they are incorrect.

I'm spinning the tire about medium hard.... for the same amount of force, my XT hubs would easily get 20-30 or more rotations... and when I spin the tire with the cranks (32 chain ring, 11 cog) and spin the cranks at approx 60rpm or so, and then let the rear wheel coast, it stops in about 6-7 rotations... the xt wheel seems to spin forever from the same thing.

The bearings are uber smooth, I cant feel any indication that they are worn, or broken inside... there is just alot of resistance.... is it possible that the hubs were tensioned improperly? Or maybe assembled with the wrong grease, or something?

There is no grease used on selaed cartridge bearings. They are not serviceable, the only grease used is that which comes packed in them when new.

Is your front hub doing the same?

If it is just the rear, it could be tensioned too much, side loading the bearings increasing friction, and decreasing their life span.

myb it has new bearings inside and that could lead to the "tightness" of the wheel. just needs breaking in if, like what corey says, no play inside.

Duh... of course... I wasnt thinking.... thanks.

The front hub is fine. What's the best way to check the tension on the hubs?

That's what I initially thought... but I've put on maybe 3 rides on fromme, a ride up and down cypress and a couple night rides in the Seymour demonstration forest, and they havent changed. So I dont think that is the problem.

this is kinda untrue.it's very easy to service sealed bearing.the seals can be removed very easily, then cleaned out and regreased.although the bearing manufacturers would love us to leave'm as is, regreasing is possible.

i know i had this problem with my ringle hub.although an easy fix, it's kinda tuff to explain.
