Specific Dell RAM?

I have a Dell Tower at home, and it desperately needs more ram. I have been told I have to buy specific Dell ram and that I have to buy it in pairs. Is this true? Is there a way around this? Does anyone know where I can get deals on ram that would work?

The tower is a year and a half old now. It is a Dimension 4600. I can check the ram when I get home today. Thanks Clay!

How old is the tower?

Dell doesn't do that anymore, as long as the new ram is the same speed (and ideally the same brand) you are good to go.

Pop a piece of ram out and tell me what it says on the side?
how do i do that?
i want to check mine too.

Unfortunately - you're probably stuck with Dell Brand Ram

Dell (with some of the clamshell cases) has used thier own type of ram - we had a p4 that was using dell ram - they look like regular dimms but don't have the same pin pattern - if it's the type that you can just replace from any computer store it would have open slots for more memory - if it's Dell branded memory you would likely see some blank memory cards in the unused memory slots...

I should have got some pictures last time I did an upgrade - we found that the memory was uber expensive

Well, this is what it gives me when I enter Dimension 4600:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...4600&submit=Go

And the prices on that page are a lot better than what I have been quoted so far.
