Cool movie: Dogtown and Z-boys

oh ya, it's nbr

I know the movie came out a while ago, but I just picked it up at the library this weekend and finished watching it just now(1am in the comp lab, everyone else is studying).

First off don't go "oh skaters suck, I'd never watch skaters in a movie", because these guys gave us the vert to ride bmx on and we all know that mountain biking is evolving from bmx now....or at least borrowing a bit. The movie is kickass and that's about all I really need to say. The interviews are great, you really get to know all of the guys and girls who were part of the early day skate boarding. Backed up with some awesome old school footage and 70's rock music the movie draws you in. Halfway through the movie I was convinced I was born in the wrong generation, that I should have been out skating and surfing in the 70's, but towards the end I mellowed out and stopped blaming my parents for getting married so late.

The photography and cinematography they use is awesome and the whole thing reaks of big stinky style. One of the guys says it straight, "If you didn't look good we didn't skate with you, it was all about having style". The older filming is really well done and it showcases the low down, fast, and twisted style of the z-boys.

Looking at it from a mountain biking view you really see some similarities. The skating boom in the 60's that died down and then revitalized in the 70's with new moves and progressive characters. While I think biking is more commercialized than skating was in the beginning it still has that rebel point of veiw, badass and dangerous(to a point). It's also evolving in a similar way to how skating evolved, riders pushing it and no-names become heros as they make their way past the "old guard" that used to exist. There are a lot of similarities.

By the end of the movie I was a little tired, but part of that has to do with me missing my bike and not having ridden in 4 months and feeling jealous. I'd suggest this movie to anyone who likes on the edge sports, good video, or rock music. It's well done and it makes you think...where are we going to be in 30 years?

I saw this in the UK when it first came out on DVD. I've never been a Skater or a BMXer, but I thought it was a well done movie. I appreciated the skills involved.

The oldschool skating was quite funny though, freestyle, slalom etc.. before it progressed to being what it is today.

it's a very good film and critically acclaimed even outside of the skating world. it documents the start of a lifestyle and culture more than just the maturing of a sport. i took a class on documentary films and we watched and studied some awesome films; a hitler propaganda film, a film exposing the true reason for the US invansion of panama, a few silent documentaries and last but not least, dog town and z boys.

Its probly one of my all time favorite videos(well... documentary). It really puts into perspective how much skateboarding has evolved. When Tony Alva first made it past the coping and launched out of the pool must have been a truly amazing moment.

the gator movie is called Stoked. A really good film but you only hear Gator on an answering machine.

Peralta also just made Riding giants - the evolution of big wave riding. Another sick documentary. Stacy has the best job.

Ahh yes, that's right, but I still say it's worth a watch, it's pretty crazy, and Jason Jesse is hillarious in it. Riding Giants is awsome too... all great flicks.
