Single Speed Question

I'm bit of a noob when it comes to this but I have a P3 (vertical dropouts) and I have a single speed hub (Surly) and apparently I need a singulator to make it all work. I tried to order one via a local shop and they can't get one anytime soon.... my question is how do I make it work and/or where can I get a singulator ?

Thanks !

JW

You also have the option of using a derailleur as a chain tensioner. That's what I use and it works well.

I have tried the singulator and am not entirely a fan of it. The derrailer option is a good one, tie wrap it up against the frame. The other option is gearing it specifically to hold the chain on, you can use a 3/4" heavy chain as well sometimes that works too.
There are a couple of different types of tensioner out there look around and good luck

Having no tensioner with a vert. dropout frame can be bad. The chain is usually way too tight or way to big. It's hard to find a good medium.

Tensioners are good... as long as they're not abused. My tensioner ran perfectly when I first got it. Now I'm smashing it into walls tailtapping, when I don't hit my tire. It still works, just not so good anymore. My recommendation is to get one. As long as you're not abusing it, it'll treat you fine. And no need to get an expensive one, like Surly or DMR. Just go with the cheapest one you can find. They all work the same.

DMR make good stuff but their chain devices and especially their "Tension Seeker" are real shady

i went through 3 before DMR gave me a refund, in fact i sold my DMR Trailstar LT frame and got a DMR Rhythm frame with horizontal dropouts as using a chain tensioner on the Trailstar was a complete nightmare.

it wouldn't stay put no matter what i tried, and tended to derail just before the take-off for a double jump, or riding fast through woods, or one time on the road and a bus nearly ran my head over when i flipped over the bars due to chain jumping off

the Surly Singlelator is much better, the DMR is a cheap knock-off and is not safe

but can't beat Horizontal dropouts for proper, safe single speed riding

There are only two tensioners worth looking at if you got the bling to fork out on either one (each around $75 CAD)

1st pick:

http://www.rennendesigngroup.com/rollen_info.html

Great because it uses no spring for tension, so ZERO chance of chainslap, and it's tough as hell and grindable. Bolts in two places, instead of just one (hanger and axle... pivots on hanger for tension). Super silent setup.

2nd pick:

http://www.rohloffusa.com/chaintensioner.htm

I'm using this because my dropouts have a "lip" around the top and side surrounding the axle bolt... so that's in the way. The rohloff works great though and is pretty quiet.

I really like my DMR tension seeker. I don't know whyt everyone's haveing problems.

A friend of mine has had his Tension seeker for like a year and 2 months, and he's had no problems.

...however, I hear that if you put them on too tight (bad idea), they can break.

I keep mine on at a good tension level. Tight enough to keep the chain on, and not allow the chain to hit the chainstay. That's all the tension you need.

I'd get a BMX chain... not the really big ones though... the smaller BMX chains work with a regular cog and sprocket too

I used an old tektro canti brake caliper,a derailleur jockey pulley, and a bolt from a broke ass derailleur. Takes a little fartin, and filing, but threaded through the back of the dropout, it does what the fancy one in the pic does.
Adjust the tension with a Zap strap, and bingo.
I have had this on the SS for months and had no probs.
I am sure it will self destruct sooner than the one in the pic , but it was free
