High-level Sino-US talks after Chinese businesswoman beaten by US guard



BEIJING (AFP) - A Chinese businesswoman has been severely beaten by a US border inspection guard in an incident taken up by Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing with his US counterpart Colin Powell (news - web sites), state media said.


Robert Rhodes was charged on Friday with civil rights violations after the Wednesday beating of 37-year-old Zhao Yan near Niagara Falls, said the China Daily, which showed a picture of Zhao's face covered in bruises.


The report said Rhodes pepper-sprayed and struck Zhao after confusing her with suspected drug smugglers.


In a phone conversation Monday, Li told Powell the United States must carry out "a serious and thorough investigation".


"Those responsible for the incident should receive legal punishment," Li was cited as telling Powell by the Xinhua news agency.


Powell assured Li that he would look into the issue, the agency said.


China and the United States have a long running spat over human rights, with both sides accusing each other of violations.


Zhao, from Tianjin city, said she told the officers who stopped her that she had legal documents, including a passport and business visa, but they beat her anyway.


She is planning to sue for five million dollars.


"I have been to many countries in the past for business purposes, and the United States is the most barbarous," Zhao was quoted as saying by the People's Daily.


According to Chinese media, Zhao and two other women were crossing the Rainbow Bridge over Niagara Falls on the US-Canada border when Customs and Border Protection officers confiscated marijuana from a male pedestrian.


The three were trying to take pictures when the officers jumped them too.


"Both of her eyes were nearly swollen shut, she had a large swollen area on the front of her forehead, she had bruises around the eyes, and she had a contusion high up on her forehead," said Senior Special Agent Steven MacMartin, cited by the China Daily.


Rhodes could reportedly face years in prison if convicted.

imagine seeing that you would probably laugh at the stupid chinese tourists taking pictures get in trouble with the fuzz then all of a sudden the pepper spray comes out and they're getting kicked in the face and torso with a leather boot

fucking sucks. trouble is all border patrol guards and such feel they're empowered to do whatever the fuck they like these days by the "war on terrorism."

even airline flight attendants act like they're the last bastion of freedom and liberty and look at you funny if you ask for extra peanuts because they know they have the force of the law and believe they have the force of moral certitude behind them.
