UK north shore guidelines

Following serious accidents at Esher Shore and Bristol during 2004, Health & Safety Executive have turned their eyes towards North Shore riding.

From all the hard work we've done to get the Health & Safety Executive to agree to re-open Esher (coming soon..) it looks like height limits are going to be mandatory for open access / commercial North Shore bike parks in the UK.

These follow guidance provided by Whistler Bike Park

If you have a site in your back garden it doesn't apply, although you should follow the guidelines as these improve safety and your riding experience.

The guidelines allow for skinnys but low to the ground, unlike the 9 foot high skinny we had at Esher Shore!!

low trail - 0.7M max height Width=height

medium trail - 1.2M max height Width 1/2 of height

high trail - 1.95M max height Width 1/4 of height

These width vs. height ratios are minimum recommended specfication, you should widen trails for sharp corners, technical sections, stunts or drops.

The H&SE Work Regulations treat any fall over 2M as "serious" and repeated falls (and serious accidents) from this height could force closure of any North Shore site. This is why we have elected for 1.95M height limit - this is 6.5 foot which is plenty high for stand alone ladder trail.

We are also looking to introduce an "Expert unlimited" classification for Pro stunts, Whistler has this classification for trails where "consquences of error may be severe or fatal" and "rescue may not always be an option" - these are not maintained by the Park Authority.

Some of the stunts at Esher already fall into this classification of Expert Unlimited and are being pulled until we can establish the highest classification and get agreement from H&SE. (but this would be only for pro/expert riders)

Esher Shore is being rebuilt to meet the new guidance, which will result in long, technical fun trails and more flow. Will post an opening date for Esher as soon as we know more...

Good luck with it Bandit.. you sorted stuff out quickly with the authorities over there.... Hope their guidlines still allows suitable challenge.

Who decides whether a rider is an expert and therefore allowed to hit an unlimited stunt, if you manage to get that allowance?

sounds to me like all of your ladders/bridges have to be super wide. That's no fun at all!

It's cool you guys are following in Whistler's foot steps.

As long as they flow, wide ladders are cool with me. Let's face it, my name may be Dan but I'm certainly not Dangerous. Good luck Bandit, sounds like you're on the right track.

you can still have challenging skinnies, they dont need to be 3M to be hard. just make em skinnier.
