installing headset bearings!

I am getting confused with which way the bearing retainers go into the unsealed type pig headset. I mean in the directions it says the bearing cup that goes in the bottom race cup is placed with bearing side down. The top crown is vice versa. But in the pictorial both bearing retainers are placed with the berarings facing down and the ring facing up. I've installed it with them both the same, ball bearings facing down. It seems to be all good, but I dont know if this is right. Anyone know. Sorry for the potentially retarded question.

Ball bearings should face eachother, bearing side contacting the headset cups, from what I know...

Make sure you put the correct race on the fork. They're almost identical.
