E-mail triggered fighter escort for Air Canada jet

VANCOUVER (CBC) - Canadian fighter jets intercepted an Air Canada flight enroute to Vancouver on Tuesday because of an e-mail threat, says B.C. Solicitor General Rich Coleman.
Coleman says the e-mail was sent to Air Canada indicating that something might happen on a flight.

"When it was opened, the only flight that it would have affected would have been this flight," he says. "And the plane decided that they wanted to make sure there was some protection in the air.

"It turned out that it was maybe a bit of overreaction with regards to how it was handled, but they were just trying to be cautious."

Witnesses say it was a dramatic scene as the two CF-18 fighter jets from CFB Comox escorted the Air Canada 767 from Halifax and Toronto as it came in for an emergency landing.

A spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP says police are still investigating, and says he can't confirm Coleman's information.

"I haven't said it was a hoax," says Corp. Peter Thiessen. "I can't speak for the solicitor general."

Thiessen says police now know there was no real danger to passengers at any time.

He also stresses it is safe for people to fly in and out of Vancouver International Airport

Pretty scary if you are on that flight and it is "for real"

Scenario 1 - There is a terrorist(s) on board. Their intentions could be simialr to those of 911. Or it could be a hostage situation. Either way, you know you are in a potentially deadly situation.

Scenario 2 - Those F18's are not accompanying your flight for negotiation reasons. What is their real purpose? Unfortunately, to shoot down the commercial aircraft prior to it flying into a building causing more human harm.

Once the bad guys realize they are being escorted, they know they are going to be caught. If their intentions are to harm innoscent people, they have two choices, crash the plane, or get it shot down. Hopefully passengers can overtake and outnumber them before it gets to that.

Scary.

The US almost shot down the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11. I believe Cheney gave the go-ahead to do so, but the plane ended up crashing.

corey brushed on it - if there is a fighter plane(s) beside you while you are in a 747, you could be done for. the ONLY reason that fighter plane is there is to shoot you down (which is a good thing because if it gets to that point you were going to be dead anyways)
