Help Save My Frame: Rear Mech Hanger (not replaceable)

I have an older cromo frame I want to use for commuting and light XC stuff...

Problem is I just got it back from a buddy and it has almost no threads left in the not-replaceable rear derailleur hanger...

Is there a part I can get that will allow me to still have a deraileur in there or should I just toss the frame and start over?

drop out saver is what you looking for, you drill it out a with the right bit and then put the saver in from the inside side of the frame and its got a set of threads in it

hmmm... I think you can get it filled with copper or something (at a welding shop) then re-threaded.

how do I install a heli-coil? it looks like a sweet product but will it require a lot of drilling or is it thin diameter?

you basically drill up a size and tap it. once tapped you screw in the heli-coil (which then reduces the size back to normal - ie Deraileur size). apparently it is then stronger than the original material.

good way to go.

Not exactly, rear derailleurs use an uncommon metric thread size. I think it is a metric fine. Finding even the correct tap isn't easy. I'd guess getting the correct helicoil set would be a special order.

Best bet would be calling bike shops to see if any of them have the drop out saver kits. They used to be common back when almost all frames were steel HTs.

Apparently, the dropout saver kits are manufactured by Wheels Mfg and possibly others:

Wheels Product PDF...see page 28

They can also be purchased online either as a kit or individually.

Orange-Cycle Canada is listed as the Canadian distributor for Wheels Mfg. (also Cycles Lambert is in there):

Is there anything saying that if he goes the heli-coil approach, he HAS to aim for the original metric thread? Why not find an imperial bold that fits the derailler and then pickup the heli-coil for that. Drill and tap the frame for the helicoil, use the imperial bolt, and - done.

Just easier to source.

Well... I decided I would go the frame saver route... so I went into Floyd at High Gear to see if he had any... took my frame along too... he actually managed to chase the threads (I didn't think there were even any left) and even though they are a little shallow a derailleur bites in fine...

He didn't even want to charge me for the effort (but that isn't right so I gave him a $10... hope that is the right amount)...

So yeah... huge thanks to High Gear for saving me from taking a drill to my bike in any way
