What would you recommend for brakes?
As soon as my income tax return comes in I shall be purchasing some new brakes. I have no idea what to buy. I dont have a ton of cash to spend (about $350-$400, I have still got to get a disk ready rear hub) and I want something that will be easy to work on. So what should I get? I have these for starters but if anyone else has any suggestions lets hear them. Keep in mind I know shit all about disk brakes cuz I am still rocking the V's.
thanks. http://www.bikeroom.com/product.cfm?ProductID=174 http://www.bikeroom.com/product.cfm?ProductID=393 http://www.bikeroom.com/product.cfm?ProductID=466 |

^^ agreed. right off the bat you can rule out the julies.
the deore's are really good if you're on a budget sounds like you are. |

scrounge e-bay you can usually find a pair of xt's with some 6 inch rotors for a decent price inyour budget range. IMO they are the nicest feeling brakes out there

Get these.
Everything you need (front & rear brakes, preblead), including mounting adapters, is included for $260 CDN. Shipping is $20, and you only pay GST. So for less than $300 you have a set of Hayes Comps. Or you could get these for about an extra $50.

I would jump all over those XT's if I was looking for new brakes around a $300 budget, definitely worth the xtra dough. Lovin my Hope M4's tho.

If you're really tight for cash the other thing to do is just run the hyro on the front and leave the V on the rear. That way you can get quality product up front where most of your braking power comes from and in time you can save teh money for the back end.

avid mechanical, front and rear. they are as easy as your v's to maintain, cheap, and offer excellent power and modulation

*edit* There's no point in wasting your money on stuff you will just end up breaking or replacing anyway. Do it right the first time.

yea in the 02 whistler season I rode with hayes 6" mechs. they don't work at all really. I was always adjusting them and I still always went out of control with 4 fingers on the levers
![]() Now I have hydros and there great so much easier to ride whistlers dh and joyride. It's not scary anymore haha

hayes mechs aren't nearly as nice as avid mechs. i know what you mean though, they get pretty bad if they're not looked after. avid speed dial levers are awesome for fixing that.
with avid mechs, if you get a good cable and good housing (jagwire), and put on a lot of cable lube it should be great.

Out of the three, get the Deore Hydros or seriously consider the Avid mechs. The 8" Avids are stupid powerful.
Shimano XTs if you can save a little more $$$. Des
