what's a good paint stripper to take black paint off of cromo cranks?

A product called Poly-Stripper. It is a paint on gel-type goo that you leave on for an hour or so. Run them under hot water and watch the paint go down the drain.

Nice and easy.

I used the same stuff to strip my Z1 down prior to repainting it.

yea... but cranks are tougher....

leave the stripper on for a good 5 hours..... i had to at least.... and then i had to get a steel brush and go to town.

Circa 1812 is another gel type stripper that works well. Buy the gel not the liquid because the liquid will just run off while the gel is stickier and goops on easier. Steel wool or metal brushes work well, you may have to do a few coats between scrubs. This stuff is really toxic though, work outside, get some heavy duty rubber gloves and protect your face.
