pure ignorance.... or am I wrong here?

Having a great weekend at Whistler. We've already done numerous laps on DM and a line. Around 1 today, we take another run on A line after hooking up with a couple other friends. I am third in our group down the trail, and as we seem to have hit a lull in traffic we keep cruising all the way down.

Getting to the a line rock drop, the 2 guys in front take the long way around rather than airing or rolling the rock face. Lately I have been going off the middle of the drop, just doing a little pop, trying to avoid the varouis rocks and holes on the tranny. As I roll to the edge and off, I hear a guy yell "watch out for my bike!" I am horrified to look down and see some dude's bike lying in the middle of the tranny right where I am about to land! I am past the point of no return, and am halfway down before he even finishes his sentence. Out of the corner of my eye I see him off to the side in the trees doing god knows what. My front tire hits inches from his bike and as I pile into it, I am thrown hard, ass over tea-kettle, and roll to a stop near the berm.

Completely winded, I am unable to talk, and only interested in self preservation as I drag myself off the trail to safety. By some miracle my buddy T (who was right on my tail) barely manages to avoid the carnage, but still blows out 5 spokes on landing. Now, my first thought after a crash is always to clear my bike and myself out of harms way. Especially at whistler, and extraespecially on a trail like a-line. But after 20-30 seconds, I am in the clear and this ignorant prick is still in the trees and his bike is still blocking the tranny. Thankfully no other riders have come by yet. T yells at him, "get your fucking bike off the trail," and finally he does just before a mass train of speed demons comes roaring thru. How fortunate for them.

Am i wrong to be pissed at this guy? I mean there is some risk we must all accept - he could have been seriously hurt and unable to move, or he could have just bailed, so it will take a few seconds to shake the cobwebs and untangle errant limbs from twisted bike parts. But this guy and his bike seemed fine, and he was well away from his bike and taking taking his sweet time - I am not exaggerating the time scale here, folks. So after watching this all unfold he finds his shoe and takes off without so much as an apology or a "hey dude are you ok?" That's horse-shit if you ask me. This guy is a total coward. Meanwhile I am left sitting there with my buddies and my fractured wrist (glory photos soon!) My season is over because this guy thought it was more important to find his freaking shoe than to clear the trail for others. It could have been any one of you in my position, on any number of jumps. Are we all supposed to stop and take a look at every jump before hitting it? Or is it reasonable to expect that tranny's will be clear, or if not, that the dude will at least make a reasonable attempt to warn you. None of that "hey man watch my bike bullshit" when it is already too late.

Have any of you had similar experiences? I'm sure we have all encountered numbnuts like this. I would love to get a piece of this guy's ass, so if anyone knows of a guy (age 18 or so) telling a matching story and riding a grey dually, probably with V10 treadmarks on the left hand side, kick him hard in the nuts for me. IMO it he deserves it.

I hope none of you suffer this same fate as me!

ps, special thanks to patrollers Kira and James and the Whistler clinicfor helping me out - you guys are awesome. From trailside to plaster cast in 2 just hours!

im sure m33p will have some choice words for this thread...

i have had my share of "holy shit" moments caused by stupid people but they arent special enuf to bother typing out....

u really have to ride and pay 110% attention to teh trail ahead. cuz stupid people on A-line are everywhere having their picnics and setting up lemon stands.....

i ve only been to whistler once, but the sheer number of stupid people blew me away. it seems that some people cant grasp what is going on at the skihills where trails get that much traffic. that brings to mind a certain person i was at whistler with, who stood in the middle of the rock drop just begging to be run over.
but if this guy deliberatley left his bike on the tranny, he should get his pass pulled i think. it is too obvious that you should not leave anything in the way in such a spot.

I seriously think that as a requirement of getting a bike park pass (both season and day,) you must pass an exam that outlines certain expectations that must be met when on the hill. Simple things, like when you hear someone yelling "ON YOUR LEFT!!!!!" stay to the right of the trail. Don't stop in the MIDDLE of takeoffs or landings. If you want to scope the jump, fair enough, but stand on the SIDE. Anyway, I haven't had too many bad incidents at Whistler, probably because I was usually there on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I think I'll subscribe to the m33p school of passing for next year, though. Just blow by 'em, because EVERY time I yell "on your left!" they swerve into me when I'm right beside them.

That's the ticket! Any n00b that rides down A-line and holds things up or stands in the middle of the jump gets neutered or spayed so that they can't reproduce!

What a fuckin MORON.

I had a very similiar experience out in Colorado...

I was bombing down a singletrack DH section... and some dumb lady and her kids are standing right in the middle of the fucking trail. It's obviously a DOWNHILL trail because there's signs EVERYWHERE that say no hiking (picture of a crossed out hiker, etc) . So what happens when I'm approaching at like 35 MPH? She stands still as a fricken rock and I almost have to BAIL into a tree.

I stop right past her... and say "LADY! Can't you READ the sign!!!" and pedal off in a hurry.

People are soo fuckin STUPID.

I hear ya man. You shoulda kicked that guy square in the nut-sack.

i know how you feel about people leaving their bike in bad places or stoping where no safe. i ate it hard on dirt merchant because some jerk had to completely stop right infront of me on one of the step downs so he could roll it. i tried to stop but going full out you can't really stop in a distance of 3 feet, i ended up nose casing and getting shot into the bottom of the tranny. another time some kid hit a tree on a-line(he was fine, the tree was in worse shape than he was) but his dad left their bikes in the middle of a blind berm and i was leading a group of about 6 guys through there again at full speed as 3 of us had next to no brakes. i ended up hitting the bikes and i cost me a derailleur, chain, chain ring, rotor, disc adapter and a pedal.

i can admit to blocking the trail once when i didn't land a hip jump and ended up sideways on the trail and just as i was picking up my bike some guy came ripping through. at first he spazed but then realized i went down and had some forgiveness

ya gotta be prepared for idiots at Whis

last year I landed on someone's bike. Landed OK, nothing broken, but the XC bike I landed on made a horrible sound - I think the frame bent/broke. If the owner is reading this, haha!

m33p's rule of Whistler.

1. If you see a moron leave his bike on the trail or in the middle of the trail, while he stands there. Yell various words like "move your fucking bike you stupid fucking idiot" ,Seems to get there attention well. No nice sayings like "please move your bike" they do not help the cause.

2. Pass without warning, if your going fast enough, they won't react till your gone, and behind you. Being better for you and them because they dont hear you and get all sketch and move over left. if your a little slower say things like "passing" less confusion, just hang back till they move till one side.

3. Remind more people of being fucking morons.

4. Someone does that again, walk up and punch them in the face, luckily, no one has left there bike for me to hit and crash. it's inevitable tho.

5. Follow me and I'll clear the way. Just watch out for carnage.

I feel your pain, I hit 4 people in 1 day this year, 4 PEOPLE.
It's not getting very fun, and it sucks ass to be out for some time. Being 230 pounds pays off tho, I seem to move people when I hit them

Don't get me wrong Whistler is a gong show. I had to incourage people out of may way all day long.

However, are you not a Watson hater for the Proto wheel collision two years ago? Watson was just running someone over who was in his way. Sounds like something you would be all for?!?

m33p - I gotta ride with you man. I love your style! I don't give a flying f*ck what the politically correct want - if someones standing around on my trail and they ain't hurt bad, they need to be told to move the f*ck outa the way. I agree with the passing rule - if you warn 'em, 9 times outa 10 they cut you off worse because they panic and/or can't hear you. Just time it well, and blow 'em aside. Once they realize what's up it's too late. As for the rock drop. That is spectator central and someday someone is going to eat it worse than they already have. Whistler needs some signage advising gawkers to stay off the trail. Remember - when in doubt, punch 'em out!

m33p: At 230lbs you'd make a great wingman for my mouthy 175lb obnoxious ass! What're you riding?
