Alright, so i got rid of the big ring and replaced it with a bash guard (as per my previous post - http://bb.nsmb.com/newforum/showthre...threadid=21081 - thanks for your help guys!!!!) and i'm lovin' it... the extra 1/2" of clearance is so noticeable, and i feel better having my 2 smaller rings protected so they won't get as warped as the big one was.... now a few questions:
1. When shifting from the little ring to the middle ring, the chain has on a few occasions hopped up onto the new bash guard. How can I adjust my front deraileur to prevent this from happening (and also prevent shifting to left hand "3" on the shifters)? 2. I suppose I don't need quite so lengthy of a chain now without the big ring. How do I take a few links out, and how do i know how many to take out? |

1. use your adjustment screws to limit the throw to the two rings you still have on your bike. i don't know how to lock out the 3rd on the shifter, but there may be a way
2. put your chain in the biggest ring on the front and biggest on the back (longest chain length), and then pull your derailer so it looks faily snug but still has some play, you should be able to estimate how many links to remove now. remember that you will have to remove links so that the new end match (ie have a pin on one link and a hole for the pin on the other) i'm not an expert on this, but this is how i did it, and since no-one was bucking up....

Thanks, appreciate your response
I will try the derauler adjustment tonight... as for the chain, I have no clue how to take it apart, remove links, put it back together (especially without having it in front of me atm...), but wonder if any special tool is required???

you need a chain tool, any shop will have one and will let you use it, if you want them to do it, it should be only a few bucks or free.

Official Shimano Method:
wrap the chain around the big ring and the big cog. bypass the derailuer. The link where they touch, add another link and break the chain there. then route it, and hook it up.
