Hockey News: holy crap the Avalanche...
the colorado avalanche just signed Paul Karyia and Teemu Selanne. this means they have Forsberg, Sakic, Hejduk, Tanguay, as well as Karyia and Selanne. undoubtably the most formidable team of forwards in the league now. as far as i'm concerned, with the retirement of patrick roy, they are a goalie away from next year's stanley cup.

shit, too bad vancouver can't throw around that much money. Burke is a really good GM and has done a lot with what he has.

yea but the fact that san jose picked up messier means nothing. they didn't sign him, they just own his rights. its the same with edmonton and brian leech. by getting the rights to these players, the respective teams garrantee themselves compensory draft picks in next years draft, plus possible other incentives. remember, next year is when the current collective bargaining agreement expires and that is going to change a lot of things about the business of the league. teams are already cutting costs.
and i agree that the avalanche have just made themselves the team to beat. you can't compare them with the rangers. the rangers are stuck in the most brutal market and fan base in the league. its the pressure of playing in new york that kills that team. but who knows now, with glen sather deciding to coach next year. btw, detroit just signed darien hatcher. fedorov has severed all ties with detroit and will be playing for another team next year. |

also, with hasek coming back from retirement to play for detroit next year (the wings picked up his option and he said he's returning) that means cujo will be available and you can't help but think that the avalanche will be going after good ole curtis joseph.

well i think whenever they get the new collective bargaining agreement in place, that is, if there is no lockout, then there maybe a better chance for the small market teams. owners realize that that time has come for changes and they have no choice but to play hardball. and the league is realizing that the small market teams have no chance and something must be done. my problem is that i don't have a lot of faith in gary betteman. frankly, i think brian burke should be prez of the league.

Hasek will come out of retirement, sign with Detroit, and then they'll trade him to Colorado ('cause Joseph has a no trade clause and at least two more years on his contract). Joseph will eventually be traded when waives his no-trade clause once he gets sick of sitting on the bench while Legacey (sp?) turns out to be the next goaltending sensation.
I wonder if any of Colorado's star forwards will move to Detroit for Hasek? After the CBA is renegotiated, and there's a salary cap (probably), you'll see repected small market teams like Edmonton and Minnesota do some pretty impressive things 'cause they've got all the experience creating good teams instead of buying them.
