Subject: Important info regarding Mt. Fromme *please read*

This is an important notice, please take time to read it, respond and forward to your
fellow riders!

June 3, 2003
Dear Member,

As most of you are aware the parking issue at the top of Mountain Highway in Upper
Lynn Valley has been at the attention of the District and Council of North Vancouver.
Currently the District is preparing another report to Council that is to address this issue.
The previous report and solutions provided were ill received by the Upper Lynn Valley
residents, nor did it meet rider expectations. It is our understanding that the forthcoming
report may recommend widespread "resident only" parking and a rider shuttle to the gate
at the top of Mountain Highway from a location near the town centre of Lynn Valley
(Library or Argyle School have been proposed). The solution provided by the NSMBA
is to disperse vehicle parking traffic throughout the community to low impact areas such
as where streets are bound by greenspace, tall hedges, etc. The NSMBA presentation can
be viewed at:
http://www.nsmba.bc.ca/news/nv_presentation.pdf

In an attempt to "cool things off" during this planning process the District wishes to
discourage use of the Fromme area by mountain bikers. To achieve this the District has
informed us that they are implementing a moratorium on all organised use of Fromme by
mountain biking groups. *Therefore the District has started by not authorizing this
season's three scheduled NSMBA Trail Days on Pipeline and the Twoonie Race
Events until further notice.* Other user groups potentially banned from this area include
Youth Rec Programs and summer camps.

Although the trails on Fromme are not being targeted at this time, threatening statements
have been made which do not bode well for future access for mountain bike riders.
*Currently the Fromme trails are still not legitimate in the eyes of the District as they
were not created by direct District action or approval.*

The District is warming up for the "Alpine Lands" Official Community Plan, a process which
will define the use of the land that presently is home to over 80% of the trails on Fromme
and Seymour. *Therefore we feel at this time that it is very important that no anti biking
precedents are set.*

Presently the Council and District are receiving many one sided comments from the
residents of Upper Lynn Valley. Although we at the NSMBA have presented to Council
and made ourselves overtly available for this process, we are but one voice potentially
drowned out by the many residents. It is the wish of the District and Council to receive
more input directly from North Vancouver riders as to come up with an amiable solution.
*We urge you to take five minutes and email your District Staff and Councillors to
provide a mountain biker's perspective on this issue.* Some points you may wish to
emphasize:

> As a resident of North Van do I not have a right to park on public roads to access
District park land on Mt. Fromme?

> Why ban Trail Maintenance Days? These are the 1% of riders that advocate
responsible riding and give back to the trails.

> Mountain biking is a genuine sport from the high school level to the Olympics, and a
leisure activity for residents of all ages. Yet it receives no support from the District while
the District spends millions of dollars on artificial turf fields, skateboard parks, ice
arenas, etc. to accommodate these other sports. What does the District do to support
mountain biking?

*It would also be most effective to address council in person at the District hall. Two
minute slots are given to anyone wishing to address council every Monday night at 7
PM. This is the best way for Council to hear your concerns.*

If you are concerned and would like further information, please feel free to contact
contact either Dave Diplock at nsmba@shaw.ca or Sharon Bader at
bader@alumni.sfu.ca

Happy Trails,
North Shore Mountain Bike Association

Lets draft up a sheet explaining the situation and a map of where to park and when we are up fromme riding we can stick the flyers under the winshield wipers of the parked cars.

It would be a shame to fuck up fromme for the sake of parking a few blocks closer to the gate.

I'm planning to ride Fromme Thurs. evening. I think I'll park on Dempsey up the hill where there aren't any houses. If you come out on trails West of the gravel road (Mt. Highway), you have to ride down the hill on Dempsey anyway. All this does is move the climb up Mt. Highway to the beginning of the ride (when you have more energy) instead of the end (when you are tired from a great ride).

I hope others will do the same.

If you are coming down trails that end East of the gravel road, park on McNair beside the section that doesn't have houses near the swamp.

If DNV puts up resident parking signs, I hope they don't put up the signs where there aren't any houses like the sections mentioned above. (Beside green space)

See page 3 of this file for suggested locations to park.

OMG
I dont have a car and almost exlcusively ride Fromme, I get up there pedaling from the seabus.

I would be really mad if someday i got up there and Mountain Bikers were banned from the trails

I though that the the DNV supported Mountain Biking, i guess not; but not authorizing this
season's three scheduled NSMBA Trail Days on Pipeline and the Twoonie Race
Events until further notice. Its ridiculous.

This is nuts. It was bad now it's real bad.

Even if we park at the mall and ride up, the locals will still get pissed off at the amount of riders on the streets. I'm worried the city will send the chain saws in... Can you say Cypress all over again..

lol

Take 40 foot lowfloor bus. remove 1/2 seats, put bike racks inside. translink shuttles from the seabus, every 15mins on weekends, for your regular fare (1.50 on sunday!!)

Getting to the shore without a car was a pain....

why is it the Golfers or Tennis players dont have troubles like this...????

its such bullshit, how MTN biking is viewed by outsiders are such a evil hobby....

fukn narrowminded government workers....

the holy bloody issue could be resolved by simply providing a gravel parking area just up past the current gate...

the local residents would never have to see us at all.....

but then they'd prolly find something else to complain about....

ok, this is just getting stupid.
i fail to understand why the DNV will not support trail days - it's not like THEY'RE doing anything to maintain the trails.
June is bike month.. um hello? does anyone else see the irony here
whatever happened to the plan of putting in the parking lot at the top of mtn highway, past the gate?
dammit i wish i lived in north van! i'd go to those meetings for sure.

I think its time to write a letter. Tomorrow I shall unleash my creative energy - my English teacher let me come to school 'lightened' ao I never skipped that class. Hence, I've been known to write some not bad letters.
