Blackbox motion control
Anyone have any experience with this feature? As far as I can tell it means that the fork has a high speed compression circuit - non adjustable, but still, has to be better at high speeds than the same form without, no? I have to admit a lot of RS jargon is hard for me to understand - motion control, mission control, flood gate, etc. - especially compared to fox, which seems to use (used?) more straight forward controls and names. Help me out/set me straight, please and thanks.

Thanks Chris!
So I was right, the BB part is a high speed compression damper. But: how (well) does it perform. |

it also depends what year fork you're looking at. I found this explanation of Floodgate really helpful for setting up my '10 Revelation: http://forums.mtbr.com/shocks-suspen...ng-136225.html. Not sure if this is still applicable to the new forks though.

that was rad bryce, thanks. i god similar advice re. the floodgate towards the end of my time on a motion-control revelation and thought it worked well...
burt, that writeup is 6/7 years old and, it seems, suspension damping has come a ways since then. i ran the revelation full open for most of my time on it and found it a bit divey - it was great for cruising with the floodgate on and blow-off on light, but the action on the fork felt compromised, a bit dead, and though control was good it didn't feel very plush i got a magura thor after the rev and though it was coil-plush in the midstroke it dove like crazy and bottomed out after more than a couple of successive decent sized hits. after 2 seasons on a float rc2 i'm done with mediocre damping - i want firm and plush and bottomless all the time godamnit! that's why i'm wondering about the blackbox compression damper. if i can find a fork to run on my hardtail with a straight steerer and 20mm axle that's nice and plush at low speed to save my wrists, and have a fork that does well on bigger hits and fast chunder, i'll be a happy clam; the 09 reba team would seem to fit the bill if its high speed compression damper works well |

ok, so a bit of an update. thanks to xcolin i now have all the parts necessary to test and compare performance of the regular mc damper vs. the blackbox one on a 2010/1l revelation. i need to adjust the travel back to 150mm, then i'm going to try the motion control damper this week, get the dual air spring set up, and hopefully switch to the blackbox one next week
looking for a bit of help though: i have to pull the lowers tonight to set the travel, and will clean and service the fork. but i'd rather not do the whole thing again next week just to change the damper. so, my question: do i have to drop the lowers to remove the motion control unit? it would seem not, but all instructions on dealing with the mc unit start with "first remove your lowers..." halp (thanks) |

you can leave the lowers on for sure... just clean around the top cap really thoroughly and remove the damper.
part of the blackbox stuff is that you also get a shimmed rebound piston which helps with successive high speed hits. not sure if that was mentioned in any of the articles. |

hm i'm on a standard sektor sl right now (the one the pitch came stock in 2011). should i upgrade the damper to the latest blackbox compression/rebound? would cost me just under 200eur or better invest in something stiffer? was quite happy with the damping on my home trails but learned the limits of it in my recent alps trips.

Boom, This is a good idea and a question that I have always wondered. Please report back with your findings.
