Waterproof Backpacks
My Camelback Mule is barely large enough to hold all my crap, but it's getting old and is not waterproof. Been looking at the Banjo Brothers packs and also I notice Dakine has a commuter model with a fold out rain tarp. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...?ModelID=49848
The Banjo Brothers have no exposed seams to absorb the water and is priced a little better, the Metro may be the ticket. http://www.banjobrothers.com/product...ing-backpacks/ What are y'all using and how do you like yours?

Courier-approved Ortlieb backpack will keep your shit dry, guaranteed. It's a rolltop dry bag. There are other rolltop bags out there that are also waterproof.

I have an old version of a MEC snowboard pack that is has water resistant fabric and zippers that I use for wet weather rides.
http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Member...ii-daypack.jsp For longer backcountry rides or shorter summer day rides with the possibility of rain I use a couple of different size Deuters pack with a rain cover. |

How waterproof do you need?
I commute with a Deuter TransAlpine 25 and use the included rain cover when it's raining. My laptop stays dry inside with just the rain cover in the worst of weather. Many days in a light drizzle I don't even bother with the rain cover and everything inside is still dry.

Citizen
I've used Chrome's Citizen bag for past 3 years in some pretty nasty rain. Never has my stuff got wet, plus I can get into it & go for coffee before Joey takes off his crinkly rolltop and open it up. YMMV.

I am using an old MEC day pack (they don't make it anymore so no link, but similar to the ones above) and a rain cover. It's been everything I need.
For what it is worth, if you are carrying a variable amount of stuff (sometimes I take my lunch or laptop, sometimes I don't), having something that will compress down nicely is a bonus. I hate having to change packs in the morning. |

I'd buy a pack that has the size and features that you want and then use a rain cover or a dry bag inside when weather turns nasty

While waterproof, that is a glorified purse. I used the larger Chrome Metropolis for 5 years before switching to a PAC courier bag which claims the same volume but can hold a lot more stuff and is way more comfortable when loaded. I just recently got the Ortlieb backpack, and while I agree that it's not as convenient to access, it's got two straps which is a big plus when you're carrying bigger loads.

Arc'Teryx Arro 22
I bought one of these about 15 years ago and still use it for my commutes to this day.
Waterproof, waterproof zippers (and Arcteryx even replaced the zipper for free for me a few years back). Great pack. http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN/Mens/Arro-22 |

Regardless of whether the pack itself is waterproof it's always a good plan to use a dry bag to hold your clothes in while in transit.

Another vote for the Ortlieb. Solid construction, completely waterproof, and comfortable while heavily loaded.

I keep a stash of clothes at work for days when I want to travel light (which I like more and more) or the weather is especially bad, or those days when you bring jeans and a t-shirt and you realize on showing up at work you have an 8:30 am meeting with a couple of VPs. I also never carry work shoes. Keep a couple of pairs (comfy and dress) at work solely for work use. On the days I don't ride, I shuttle articles of clothing back and forth between work and home.
