commuter project

I have an old Rocky Mountain frame, and have found a rigid fork for it....can you wise fellows recommend me a cheap set of wheels for this commuter / hybrid project?

I'd like to build this thing up as cheap as poss. Parts I have:

-frame
-fork
-BB
-cranks
-bars

Decide my life

Learn to build your own wheels. Commuter bike is great for that as it's not as hard on the wheels as trails.

Cram some 700c or 650b wheels in there if it's going to be a skinny tired street commuter.

Location aside, OCB wheels are only as good as the volunteer who tuned them up, and the question of freehub longevity and rim wear still remains. A set of quality machine-built catalog wheels isn't that pricy - something like a Deore LX to Rhyno Lyte non-disc wheelset shouldn't run much more than $100 from your LBS. I'm a big fan of machine-built Shimano 2200's to Alex DA22's for the 700c crowd.

Unless you can get a smoking deal from your LBS on some new rims and spokes, and scavenge some cheap hubs from somewhere like OCB, low-end machine-builts will almost always be cheaper than rolling your own due the sheer economies of scale involved.

Hunt Pinkbike or ebay for hubs.

Are you going to rub disks or v-brakes? I'd suggest building the wheels with disc hubs even if you are going to go rim brake as it will allow you to use discs on some future build.

Alex rims are good value for money.

I actually have the old hubs that used to be on this bike somewhere I think...I suppose I can include that in my parts list^. Both hubs are disc friendly. I was considering a set of mechanical discs...searching for some half decent used ones first.

Just need to find a local shop to buy the correct spoke wrenches, and I'll look into Alex rims as a choice for rim.

Any recommendations on a truing stand?

If he runs 700c he will have no choice but to run discs. The brakes won't line up as the frame and fork are designed for 26".

As osn said, building your own wheels sounds nice but the cost of buying used rims and hubs plus spokes plus wrenches and a truing stand can add up to the cost of a new pair of pre built wheels pretty quick. Not to mention the time and effort involved.

I have hubs. Gonna buy some 26" rims and build em up.

Heading down to my local to suss out some rims. Got some friends with numerous spoke wrenches....and a friend down the street has a truing stand; I can make this happen

Did I mention the fork I found is a cyclocross fork with some disc mounts on it? I wonder how this thing will ride...

plus you can just as easily do your own stress-relieving and re-true and tension when you get those machine builts, and they're gonna be as good as some hand-builts.
