NSMB pseudo lawyers: McBarge
As most of us know, the McBarge has been anchored in Burrard Inlet for a long, long time. Aren't there some federal government / Transport Canada regulations on how long you can anchor an unmanned vessel in a waterway?
It's great that they're fixing it up and using it for a waterfront restaurant/attraction, sort of like how Steveston has some tourist trap fish & chips restaurants, and New West has its waterfront promenade... But my question is, how has a private owner been allowed to anchor that thing in Burrard Inlet for so many years? Have they been paying the feds? Or have they been exploiting a loophole in regulations that has let them keep it there for free, because they're too cheap to tow it somewhere and pay ten years of moorage for such a huge thing? http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...-comeback.html

What makes you think they wouldnt be paying? They should be paying water lot lease. The barge has been used in at least one movie(blade 3) and I think one other movie.

I believe a foreshore lease with the province is only valid if something is connected to the shoreline or occupying the area where the tide goes in and out... This is in the federally regulated waterway.

It used to be a MacDonalds, so its too toxic to move, clean, repair or scuttle. Medical experts warn that merely looking at it from the relative safety of the North Shore will cause your arteries to harden.

Still curious as to why you feel they are not paying? Did I miss something somewhere? The province has 100's of barges tied up all over the place, does this bother you to?

Do all the other barges look as pretty as this one?
... Reminds me of when Homer designed a car.

I like grouse mountain. It is awesome. But when I think about the mountain I fear that the property taxes aren't high enough.
I don't know what the taxes are but I think they are ripping north van off. Any tax experts know how I can foreclose on grouse ? |

I think it's inappropriate to leave a derelict, graffiti tagged eyesore tied up for 10+ years somewhere in a waterway adjacent to a major urban area. The industrial barges tied up all over the place are in active use. The McBarge isn't.
