How many PowerLinks is too many?

Managed to break a chain again on Sunday (bad shifting on my part) and while putting a new PL on I counted 4 others on the chain (yes, I'm working on my shifting).

How many is too many?

If I have broken a chain I usually replace it soon after. Unless I can identify the exact link that was damaged and why, I figure there might be other damage too which can only lead to another failure. I would replace it if I had four failures already.

It's not done until you've started replacing broken Powerlinks with new Powerlinks.

I wish I could get the PL on my 10 speed to open up so I can shorten the chain.

You need the most amazing tool ever.....the Powerlink removal tool. Although officially the 10sp Powerlinks are one use only.

10sp power links get mighty lose if you try to re-use them.

if you backpedal and your freehub is sticky you are asking for trouble

Usually once you get 1 break it's time to replace the chain. Usually the chain wears pretty even so once you get 1 failure your bound to get another more and more frequently.

I've never had a powerlink fail, so I wouldn't feel bad putting a second on there, but normally, if a chain snaps, then there is a good reason that it's snapped, and you need to make sure that it's a one off cause, not a systematic failure.
