Snow ride? Already?

Snow ride? Kind of early for snow riding ain't it? I did a Brother Creek up and down times two. Snow at the top of the properties! Apparently breakable crust is almost as difficult to ski as it is to ride. I am thinking this winter may be poor for riding. Time to start looking at low level stuff. Maybe even driving to UBC with the dogs! Are dogs allowed off leash in Pacific Spirit park? Does any one care in the dark?

There are only certain doubletrack trails that dogs are allowed off leash. That doesn't stop people from using the whole park as an off leash area though.

Nighttime is by far the best time to ride the endowment lands. Rarely any other trail users and night gives you the sensation of speed. You can ride all year round, even if there is a few cm's on the ground. I used to host a night ride every tuesday in there.

Sunday on Leopard/Crinkum was my first snow ride of the season.

Temps were hovering just above freezing, making all wood extremely slick. The results were not pretty!

Traction will improve as the temps drop.

Here is a map that indicates on/off leash trails. I've ridden a couple times at night and it seems pretty empty, so likely not a big deal to have them off leash.

Is there decent riding at Buntzen? I would never have guessed it! I'm interested!

Snow makes easy trails hard, which means you don't have to go as far for a challenge. I'm looking forward to riding all winter, though if we get a big dump of snow that might stop things for a couple weeks.

Thanks for the map. Boy the memories that brings. I used to live at 8th and Blanca and my very first mountain bike ride was in there in 1983. And many many more. A gang from West Point used to do weekly Wednesday night rides throughout the winter. With generator lights. With output of about twice that of a Bic lighter. Good times followed a bike stack in front of a local pub and refreshments.

Yeah, there's some nice trails there IMO. Academy is fun. Eagle is cool. And there's one called Lakeview which goes around the lake but it's a lot longer/harder than the hike that goes with the shoreline (bikes not allowed on the easy one.) It goes up quite a ways then back down near lake level and then back up again a few times. Also there's some cool stuff that goes from Sasamat Lake up to Buntzen Lake/Diez Vistas. I must warn you though, I have run across a shitload of bears around these areas this year. Mothers and cubs a couple of times.

Lots of trails bellow the BP on Fromme. A few could use some links then we'd have some great little XC loops.

Not exactly a cheap way to go but for a couple of hundred it looks like a way to extend your riding season.

You, my friend, just saved me a couple hundred bucks and a trip to teh emergency. Or did you mean bad for the wood and roots as opposed to bad for riding on said wood and roots. Either way, I guess I'll go sticky tires and huge caution.

If you ;look carefully on old wooden structures built for hikers, you'll see the wear from caulk boots. Essentially they are old school golf shoe spikes. I had a pair of those the summer I worked in Alaska. Incredible traction which was a safety consideration where we were working.

On a bike they are only good on ice or wood but will chew the crap out of wood. They will not grip rack all that well though and could be a liability and if you get too far back and low, there go your nads. I don't wanna think about that.
