change LAN

If my LAN has died on my PC ( no wireless, router is fine, hard wired it has internet access) how hard is it to change it out? Is it a card, or a switch? Will i need to solder or is it plug n play? I can work with instruments i have not done any work on PC's. Worth a try or flog this thing?

What exactly do you mean by "LAN has died"? Laptop WiFi no longer working? What make/model of computer is it?

these days lancards are onboard usually, i.e. soldered to the mainboard. good luck...

If its cheap i will give it a try, but if the card is more than 100$ i probably wont bother. Just put the money towards new or refurbished PC. The desire to stay connected and not loose internet ability is inverse the amount that i am willing to spend $$$ on it. Im cheap with this stuff as a lap top or tablet is in the near future.

If you're talking about an Ethernet connection for a desktop, assuming you have an empty expansion slot, you can get a new LAN card for $20. Just install the card and disable the onboard LAN in BIOS.

If you're talking about wireless for a laptop (or a desktop), you can get a USB WiFi adapter for $20-30. Just plug it in and you're back in business.

next step I would check for wifi thru your router with another working computer, using someone else's LT would be easiest

taking your desktop to another router would also prove(or not)if the computer is ok at which point its the computer or something else

it sounds to me like you are jumping to conclusions instead of figuring out what is not broken

Ya im chasing the tail a bit. I assumed (just making an ass of me) that the router was good because it worked when the ethernet cord was hooked up to PC. That may or may not be true. I tried to reset it and power it down and nothin doing. Telus support hours are not the best so i may have to wait until monday.

all that means is the hard wired com party of the router is working but that wasn't your problem, usualy you can't literaly see what is broken in a computer so you need to figure out what is not broken by process of elimination using a logical thot process ...like mr Spock would do

Ping the router. If that fails, try a known good router, as well as a swapping on a known good cable. That should give you the answer.

If the onboard LAN is hooped, USB LAN, a PCI card, or a new MB are options.
