Watching the events of June 15 Vancouver riot unfold I was pissed. It is clear that the riot most likely would have occurred had the Canucks won or lost. That, in my opinion, is a sad commentary. But after reviewing the event afterwards I have come to the conclusion that there is a silver lining here.

Two things come to mind.

First, it is now clear that the mob is no longer anonymous. In the past, rioters could come out from within the mob, inflict some damage and scurry back into the safety of the mob. This allowed rioters to be somewhat anonymous and more likely unaccountable. But now with smart phones recording everything from multiple perspectives and social media allowing people access to this media that is no longer the case. The mob as a whole may think it's anonymous but it is in fact the exact opposite. The douchebags who riot now have nowhere to hide.

Second, we now also see how the internet now empowers everybody equally and, if so desired, anonymously. How many people are now scouring hours of youtube videos and thousands of photos seeing if someone they recognize is participating in order to tag the time, identify the doouhebag and report them anonymously to the appropriate authorities. How sweet is that.

So it looks like the rules have changed on how these types of events will now play out and in my opinion it's for the better. Douchebags can't be anonymous and those who want to do the right thing and expose them can be. Score two for technology.

Friendly tip for anyone on here who is themselves or have kids looking to get on varsity teams at the Uni level. Coaches monitor Facebook and all the other sites. Some even monitor recruits behaviour as well.

No. Pressure the prosecutors to push for the maximum penalty. Large fines and imprisonment.

duke' , i like your observations and in this particular situation i hope that the technolgy does aid in bringing those responsible to justice .

This was done long before tech. We used to have Block Parent and Neighborhood Watch programs.

Add to this neighbors used to actually do this novel thing called interact.

What is a concern though is a swing too far the other way meaning - playing judge, jury and executioner. Provide the proper authorities with accurate info and let them do their job. I know of one person who was stupid enough to be caught in a photo that was not very positive but they did nothing more than pose for a photo.

Others looking at the photo may draw different conclusions, what happens then? People do stupid things, nobody here can say otherwise but they also did nothing illegal. Let the police sort it out.

You need to look up the legal definition of "riot".

But I agree, the police and prosecutors need to sort it out. However, there's nothing wrong with citizens assisting them with their jobs.

Yes, we're all aware of Alex Pro.

People that were posing for photos against the riot backdrop were not helping the situation. They were providing an audience and feeding the emotional fuel of the riot. I get that there is a collective link to this kid, and as he claims, he may not have done much more than have a picture taken, but frankly - he brought shame upon my city, he can man up to the repercussions.

Choices were made on Wednesday.

I hate this comment. He wasn't posing! He was cheering and celebrating a very ugly and illegal situation. I had the misfortune of being caught in the first Kelowna Reggata riot and I can tell you I never once stopped and posed for any pictures. I was horrified and disgusted by the hooliganism and with my 6 friends beat a hasty retreat out of there. Any person that has been raised with a strong sense of what is right and wrong would do the same. He instead chose the wrong instead of the right and now he will pay.

I spent a good half hour last night (as have many others I see have in another post) making sure his fine sponsors know of this and also know that if their sponsorship of him continues that I will never purchase their products again. Common sense rules people. He showed NONE.

Really Couch? Look at his hands, his shirt, and his pants in that photo, they're filthy black. He was smack dab in the middle of messing stuff up.
