Agreed on the Respro mask, I have one as well, wear it when I'm commuting to work. I love it and can definitely tell the difference...

I still can't really read or write though. I gave up on that shit. I just wish more people here could actually speak proper mandarin. Outside the cities the education is low and most people only speak their local dialect. If I couldn't talk to people I would probably be home by now too.

I've seen 2 uncovered dead people from accidents here and 1 partialy covered dead person who was on a stretcher next to me in a hospital waiting room. Just the other day I saw a group of farmers carrying a dead body wrapped in cloth and scattering firecrackers as they walked down the highway.

Looks like you're packing pretty light? Curious about what you're using for self support on this journey? I bumped into some guys that were bike touring through Africa when I was there and they had broken pretty much every part on their rigs...

And why is the 5 RMB note special?

Great trip, super jealous and impressed. Keep up the travel reports and pics when you get a chance!

I've got six tubes, patches and some basic tools. Spoke wrench, allen keys and stuff. I'm still in developed China so finding hotels is easy but I'll probably have to pack more gear when I get further west. Good thing about my bike is there isn't really anything that can break. Flat tires and wheel warping is my only real concern.

The 5 kuai note has scathing criticisms of the guvahmint printed on it. A lot of bills here are taken ad run through a printer and then casually put back into circulation.

Saw a dead body yesterday. Just lying on the side of the road, looks like he's been there a while. At that moment you want to do something but there were lots of other people around and no one seemed to give two shits.

Sometimes it's so hard to know what the right thing to do is. I kept riding. I don't know if this makes me a bad person or not.

That's not easy to do here. Do it too much and you feel like the biggest asshole. Do it too little and it's like you're not trying to adapt.

Ah well..

I'm feeling a little low at the moment. The last couple days have been rough and southern Hebei is a shithole. I crossed the historic yellow river yesterday but it wasn't there anymore. Totally dried up and being used as farmland now. ...fuck.

Today I'll be riding through the Henan countryside to Kaifeng. It should be pretty nice. Lot less industry in Henan. Kaifeng is pretty, quiet and touristy so I think I'm going to spend 3 days there. I need a break from "real" China.

I don't know what you could do about the body. I'm sure they all know it's there but it's likely bad luck to do anything about it.

Made it to Kaifeng. Rode 180 kms today. Will post pics in the morning... Sorry zahg but you should know as well as I do that country girls go from 0-marriage in less than 4 seconds.
